Messages from Madrid

Oliver Rogers
Oliver Rogers has jetted out to Madrid to follow the Women's Hockey World Cup to report on Chelmsford Ladies players Lisa Wooding, Katie Roberts and his sister Chloe as they aim to steer England to glory. He'll be keeping a blog of his experiences.

Monday 25th September

Getting packed to head off to Madrid. Chloe phoned up with a list of some items she wants me to bring over - her special little England Teddy Bear with her Number 27 on it and a rist band made by defender Crista Cullen. The Teddy Bears were given to all of the team out in Australia by the Head Coach Danny Kerry and each has their number on it.

However, I don't think I'm giving anything away here, she has moved to Number 12, so the bear will need a new jersey.

She also had a message from goalkeeper Katy Roberts asking if I could bring some squash over as she can't get any in Spain. Apparently she must have Robinson's with a combination of two fruits! Not just plain orange.

So that's going in - maybe I'll have to test it in front of one of the security people at Stansted!

Wednesday 27th September

I had to get the Metro and a bus to the middle of nowhere before I was standing at the entrance to the Club de Campo. The security guard said 'its just up the road'. That turned out to be a half-hour walk! On top of this I was having to pull my little case full of wires and radio kit.

The media centre was in a bit of turmoil as they were still trying to make it work! We managed to get some of the telephone lines working eventually.

The game against China was pretty good. The stand out player was Alex Danson, although Chelmsford's Lisa Wooding and Chloe had their moments. Chloe passed along the goal line to Lucilla Wright for the second goal and at one point towards the end of the first half Chloe's stick skills caused the crowd to clap.

The match ended England 3-2 China. It's a good result and gets the tournament off to the right start.

England take on the World Number 1's, the Netherlands on Friday. So fingers crossed, if the wind is in the right direction, and we've got enough good-luck charms - like the teddy bears - maybe England could produce a major upset.
