Essex cricketer Darren Gough, who only took up dancing 10 weeks ago, beat the Olympic sprinter Colin Jackson and DJ Zoe Ball, to be crowned ball room king.
The 35-year-old bowler paid tribute to his dancing partner Lilia: "She has turned me into some sort of dancer. I cannot believe I had the confidence to do that tonight. I could not have wished for a better partner."
In the audience for the final was Phil Meacham from the Chelmsford Dance Centre. What was the atmosphere like? It was absolutely electric, it was just the most wonderful experience. I think the most surprised man of the night was Darren. He was so humble and surprised that he'd one. He was genuinely shocked. But I think that is what is so nice about Darren, he's quite humble about it, he didn't expect to get this far, he didn't expect to get off the starting blocks in this competition and his won it! Well done Essex for voting for him. What do you say to the critics who say that Colin and Zoe were better dancers? Colin is a very good dancer, he's got a good dancing body, he's very athletic. He performed a superb box split. I said 10 weeks ago that the person who wins this competition doesn't have to be the best dancer, they have to look like the best dancer. Darren looked like the best dancer, he did all the right things. Colin didn't look like the best dancer, especially on the night. There was a bit of a faux pas, with his freestyle dance. It was a huge risk, I commend them for taking the risk, but if you take a risk and it goes wrong you also have to take the backlash and unfortunately, it was a mistake. It was three horse race, I was really surprised that Zoe was out in the final, but it could have been anyone of those three guys. Darren just did what he was supposed to do and performed the goods and triumphed. Another great part of show, were the judges who kept bickering with each other ... It didn't stop until the early of the morning! I think that Len Goodman certainly has a strong view on the overall performance, and I'm going to be biased because I come from the same stable, he had a view on the overall performance he doesn't take the nit-picking into account and he wanted to make his point. Have you noticed an upsurge in the number of people interested in dancing? Indeed. It has been very very "alarming" really. Last time we had Strictly Come Dancing on the upsurge happened just after the series had ended, this time it happened as the show started so it makes wonder what is going to happen in a few weeks, it's quite worrying! Do you think there'll be more boys coming to see you? Definately, it has always been a thing that we've had a problem with getting enough boys into dancing. But what seems to happen now is that because you've got people like Darren Gough that have done so well in the programme, it's become incredibly fashionable for men, young men, hunky men, strong men to be able to dance. As far as Darren's cricketing career is concerned, we've had Ronnie Irani and Graham Napier involved in a bit of dancing. Do you think it could become part of the cricketers training? Darren has said he's felt fitter now than he would normally. We've talking to Essex Cricket Club about trying to do a kind of tie-in with the dancing. What shape or form that's going to take at the moment we're still looking at. It might be part of the 20/20 when that comes up we just don't know. |
