Long Meg near Penrith in the Lake District is a stunning stone circle made up of granite boulders forming a ring. The poet William Wordsworth was moved to describe it as "a weight of awe", "giant mother" and "a family forlorn". The circle was built during the Bronze Age 4,500 years ago, and is one of the oldest and largest stone rings in the world. Some say that the stone circle represents a coven of witches, petrified by a Scottish wizard and known as Long Meg and her Daughters. Despite archaeological studies, we still haven't fully unlocked the secret of the stones and the mystery of who placed these giant boulders in their current location. |
