| | Mel's first involvement in broadcasting came when he was asked by Radio Stoke to do an introductory series on jazz (sponsored by Keele Adult Education) - which subsequently became the first local radio series to be given national airing. Since then, he's not looked back - with series on national radio, especially BBC Radio 3, too!
Says Mel: "I did the first Radio Three series on a non-classical vocalist (Sinatra). I subsequently did Peggy Lee, Hoagy Carmichael and Tony Bennett, for which I had to go out to Atlantic City!"
"I did several other series for Radio 3 - all very well reviewed in broadsheets. Did two series of protest music for Radio 2, which was pick of the week in TV Times!"
Internet friendly? Mel's show is now available to internet devotees all over the world... Yippee!

Musician He not only loves jazz and can talk about jazz, but he can walk the walk too, because he's a successful, musician in his own right. He plays a trumpet, sings, and writes songs.
He says: "The trumpeters I most identify with are Bobby Hackett, Chet Baker and Sweets Edison. I'm lucky in playing with the local musicians I most admire. There are a dozen of them - I daren`t pick them tho!"
"I'm currently playing in a variety of bands, playing New Orleans Jazz with the Old Fashioned Love Band Two; in a guitar, bass and cornet outfit with Fine and Dandy; mainstream with the Orchid Cotterill Trio Mainstream; and be-bop with the Cool School....."
Mel however admits he has a long way to go to emulating his top three musicians of all time - jazz masters Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington and Charlie Parker.
