Jamila Azam was born to a quite a large (and still growing) family in Gorakhpur, U.P. (Uttar Pradesh), India. However after the 1947 Independence her family migrated to Chittagong, Bangladesh (then East Pakistan).
She grew up in a very close knit and loving family and had a great time growing up with her 4 brothers and 3 sisters (a total of 8 brothers and sisters: wow, never a dull moment, eh?!); she is also very fortunate in having very loving and wonderful parents.
When she got married, she came to Edinburgh, Scotland so her husband could finish his post-graduate study. In 1961 moved to Stoke and in 1967, the finally settled in Werrington; they are now a part of the village life.
She has been married to Dr. M. F. Azam (who is now a retired G.P.) for over 40 years; they have three children, (two sons and one daughter) and two grandchildren (one granddaughter and one grandson).
Her career had been on hold until her three children left home; she worked as a Practice Manager and Fund Coordinator for her husbands’ practice.
She joined BBC Radio Stoke in February 1987 and worked as a part of the Asian Connection Team doing nearly fifteen years on and off in the hot seat!
