Correspondent Profiles - James Roberson

When I was working in radio and living in Sheffield in the 1980s, I worked for a couple of days at BBC Radio Derby on a freelance basis.

I was so horrified - even on short acquaintance - by Derby's impenetrable city-centre road system, I swore I'd never come back.

James reports on issues from all around the region.

Which is why I now live and work in Derby, and Derbyshire, and all my children have been born there! It's turned into a love affair.

I rapidly realised what a friendly city we'd come to, what great people live here, and what a lovely place it's been to bring up kids... especially with the beautiful Peak district on our door-step.

It wasn't ALL plain sailing. Initially when we moved to Derby, I was working at the BBC's Pebble Mill studios in Birmingham.

Then I became the Stoke reporter for Midlands Today, often travelling from Derby to Staffordshire, to Shropshire, to Birmingham and back to Derby in a day!

It was a relief when East Midlands Today started in 1991, and I became first the Leicester reporter, and then Derbyshire reporter and now a special features reporter.

It's a tough job having to cover such a wonderful region, but I'll just have to go on putting up with it!
