The BBC Concert Orchestra has come a long way since it was formed in 1952 to provide incidental music accompaniment for radio plays. They perform throughout the world and their flexible repertoire ranges from classical works and grand opera to popular music. Their current Composer-in-Residence is Jonny Greenwood, Radiohead's
guitarist.
They're perhaps best known for the stunning TV scores for series such as The Blue Planet and Walking With Dinosaurs, and for Friday Night Is Music Night
, the world's longest running live music radio programme.
Other recent highlights include Flashmob The Opera
, where the orchestra performed live at Paddington Station and Urban Classic
, a ground-breaking event which fused grime, hip hop and classical music.
At Electric Proms the BBC Concert Orchestra performed with Kasabian and Guillemots. It has always been Kasabian's ambition to play with an orchestra and it was truly unique meeting of musical worlds. The Guillemots created a new performance for the night - bringing the orchestral sound of their music to life.
