Swimmer Ross Davenport from Derby was voted Sports Personality of the Year by viewers and listeners to BBC Local Radio in the East Midlands and East Midlands Today. He swam to two gold medals and one silver medal at the Commonwealth Games. Gymnast Becky Downie of Nottingham was named Junior Sportswoman of the Year. The 14-year-old gymnast was the youngest member of the England team at the Commonwealth Games and won two medals. Gavin Evans of South Muskham in Nottinghamshire is Junior Sportsman of the Year. The 13-year-old table tennis player is the best in his age group in Europe. Mandy Young of Corby, Northamptonshire won the EMDA Enterprise in Sport Award. She has spent four years bringing together local businesses, local authorities and local youths to form Adrenalin Alley - one of the UK's most innovative and best Urban Sports Centres for skateboarding and bikes. Sally Reddin of Lincolnshire won the Disabled Sportswoman of the Year Award. The 59-year-old is the oldest member of Britain's Paralympic team - but she’s still winning medals. Disabled winnersRichard Whitehead of Nottingham was named Disabled Sportsman of the Year. He competed for GB in the Winter Olympics in Turin in sledge hockey. He has also run ultra marathons and marathons and played for his county at cricket. James Coyle-King of Lincoln won the Lady Taverners' Award for Junior Disability Sport. He was presented a cheque for £500 to be split between Dwarf Athletics and Jaguars Wheelchair Basketball Club. He has had a string of exceptional performance in a wide range of sports. Andy Wood of Derbyshire is Coach of the Year. He looks after doubles teams for GB badminton. In the last 12 months he has coached his players to gold medals in the World Championships, the Commonwealth Games and the European Championships. Tracy Whittaker-Smith of Northamptonshire was named Sport England East Midlands’ Community Coach of the Year. She has coached two athletes to the European finals in trampoline gymnastics and continues to develop an academy with an imminent move to a new centre. Badminton ace Nathan Robertson, Nottinghamshire was named Sportsman of the Year after winning gold medals at the World Badminton championships and the Commonwealth Games. Runner Lisa Dobriskey of Loughborough won the Brian Clough Breakthrough Award. The promising athlete announced her potential with a surprise gold medal in the 1500m at the Commonwealth Games. Leicester Ladies Hockey Team is Team of the Year. They won the League and Super Cup for the second successive year and won bronze in the European Cup Winners Cup. Tanvir Akram, Derby topped the field in the BBC East Midlands Unsung Hero supported by Tesco. His award was for the work he has done to help teenagers in inner city Derby. Tanvir will now be a guest at the BBC Sports Personality of the Year Awards on Sunday December 10th to contest the national title. Gordon Banks, former Leicester City and Chesterfield was given a Lifetime Achievement Award. He helped England win the World Cup in 1966. At Leicester he played in two FA cup finals and two League Cup finals. The event was sponsored by Sport England East Midlands and presented by John Inverdale and a host of other top presenters and sports personalities. It was also beamed worldwide in a TV webcast. |
