Michael Jackson's death and Obama becoming president were both major issues of national interest, so EastEnders referenced them by filming an extra scene.
Yesterday's Government's Spending Review was no different, so a last-minute scene has been cleverly slotted into tonight's show to illustrate its significance.
The additional scene shows Patrick serving behind the counter of the Minute Mart with his ear to the radio, listening to a budget announcement. The shop owner's reaction to Charlie shows he's none to pleased with the news!
So, if you didn't understand the Review before... you may still be in the dark after watching tonight's episode, but you'll at least get Patrick "Yeah man" Trueman's take on it.
The short dialogue between the pair reflects the Chancellor George Osborne's cuts in tonight's show which starts from 7.30pm, BBC ONE.
