Lucy's leaving

Melissa Suffield as Lucy Beale

Tuesday 01 June 2010

After six years playing the character of Lucy Beale, it's been announced that actress Melissa Suffield will be leaving EastEnders in the summer.

Melissa took on the role of troublesome Lucy in October 2004, following actresses Eva Brittin-Snell, who played her from 1993 to 1996 and Casey Anne Rothery, who continued the role from 1996 to 2004.

One half of the Beale twins, Lucy's life was always quite eventful. With Cindy and Ian as parents, that was only to be expected! The rebellious teen loved to walk on the wild side with her out-of-school activities - from bad boys to blackmail - but more often than not this 'homework' got her into big trouble.

Lucy's been held hostage, mugged, run away from home and put the frighteners on Christian and Syed. She could also serve up a mean cod and chips if she wanted to.

Updated 14 June 2010: The role of Lucy is now set to be recast. Its common practice in continuing drama to recast actors employed as children to take on more challenging adult storylines.
