Jim Broadbent

The winner of a Best Supporting Actor Oscar for his role in Iris, Jim's other credits include The Gathering Storm, alongside Albert Finney, and the 2003 Christmas drama The Young Visiters, with Hugh Laurie.

What's he been in?

Jim starred in 2006 drama The Street. His character, Stan, found himself forced out of his beloved work three weeks short of his 65th birthday, and was left contemplating suicide. Waking the Dead's Sue Johnston played his on-screen wife Brenda.

His films credits include Iris, alongside Judi Dench, the role of Bridget's dad in Bridget Jones's Diary, the colourful Harold Zidler in Moulin Rouge, and Professor Kirke in The Chronicles Of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch And The Wardrobe.

The Gathering Storm gave Jim the opportunity to work with two of his heroes, Albert Finney and Ronnie Barker.

He's also well known for his role as Roy Slater in Only Fools and Horses, despite appearing only three times in the series. His other comedy roles include several appearances in a number of episodes of Blackadder.

Jim's succesful film career also includes credits in Superman IV, The Crying Game, Richard III, Little Voice, and Bright Young Things.

He appeared alongside screen legends Robert De Niro, Leonardo DiCaprio, Daniel Day Lewis and Joe Pesci, in Martin Scorcese's 2002 film Gangs of New York.

Jim's voice can be heard on several animated films, including Valiant and The Magic Roundabout. He also provided a voice of lion in 2004's Pride.

Did you know?

Starring as Iris Murdoch's husband in Iris struck a particular chord with Jim. His own mother suffered Alzheimer's before passing away in 1995.

In the same ceremony that saw Halle Berry weep over her award, Jim's simple Oscar acceptance speech began, 'Stone the crows!...'

In 1992, Jim starred in A Sense of History, a TV film he wrote himself.

Jim is a former, or to be more precise a future, Doctor Who. He made a cameo appearance as a new incarnation of The Doctor in the 1999 Comic Relief story, The Case Of The Fatal Death.

Personal Details

Jim was born in Lincoln, Lincolnshire in May 1949.

He married his wife Anastasia in 1987.
