Leicester Haymarket Theatre’s production of The Bogus Woman is a powerful political play, which uses poetic language that is both brutal and beautiful. Award winning actor, Sarah Niles plays 48 different characters in 90 minutes, offering an insight into the human experiences behind this internationally relevant and sensitive issue. It’s 1997, a distressed and beaten African woman is interrogated at Heathrow, unable to explain how she arrived there. This nameless individual is locked up in Campsfield Detention centre and becomes involved in the protests that led to the trial of the Campsfield Nine, the group of refugees who were accused and acquitted of rioting at the centre. This work vividly dramatises not only the unrest at Campsfield but also the thuggish and often racist backlash that followed and describes in harrowing terms the centre’s 'prison for profit' regime.
