Bournemouth uni summer ball 2005

5,000 Bournemouth University students celebrated the end of the summer term in style with an 11 hour fancy dress ball.

Over 5000 students packed Bournemouth Sports Centre for the University's annual summer ball.

The dress code was 'fancy' and the standard was impeccable. A whole host of 'celebrities', including Chewbacca, the Incredible Hulk, Marge Simpson, Mr T and Marilyn Monroe, made an appearance.

Five stages provided the entertainment with everything from Rock to Hip Hop, Salsa to Breakdance.

Phantom Planet, the band best known for their single California (which is also the theme tune to TV's The OC), proved they're no one-hit wonder when their set went down a storm with the student crowd.

After playing on the main stage, the band told BBC Dorset how much they had enjoyed the night: "This is the best summer ball we've done this year. It's just amazing to see the effort people have made with their costumes".

Radio 1's Colin Murray played a mixture of cheese and classic rock on the main stage after headliners Röyksopp He was heard to comment how Bournemouth University's ball beat Southampton's hands down.

He told BBC Dorset how much he was enjoying the evening: "The atmosphere is great. There are a lot of half naked people out there in some great fancy dress".

Although Colin hadn't dressed up for the occasion there were no end of helpful students ready to donate items of fancy dress to the DJ. At various points in his set he was dressed as a police officer, a Mexican and a woman.

The Cuban Brothers

After the ball, sources close to Colin told BBC Dorset that the DJ played 20-a-side football on Bournemouth beach until the early hours. Returning to work on his afternoon show on Radio 1 he described the evening as "staggering".

Headlining the Latin Funk Corner were the outrageous Cuban Brothers. In any normal situation they would have been overdressed in their pale Panama suits, orange tans, enormous moustaches and huge cigars - but not tonight!

They charmed the ladies, some of which were dressed as mermaids, with a mix of breakdancing, karaoke and salsa.

Apparently, the brothers’ mission is to spread laughs, sexy rhythms and Latin love around the globe, and by the sound of the whooping crowd they more than achieved their goal in Bournemouth.

Bournemouth University Summer Ball is now in its eleventh year. Previous performers have included Travis, Kosheen, Trevor Nelson and DJ Lottie.
