Sacks of snow - better known as salt!
Adjusting the camera during filming of the desert scene.
Spike sweeps the sand across the set.
Ripples are made using a fan, with antifreeze in the water to break surface tension.
Lighting - several of these large lights are used, making filming very hot work!

Smoke adds to realism by mimicking atmospheric haze. And it's pretty cool to play with, too!
