The Abominable Snowmen
Episode Two contact sheet
'Jamie!' cries Victoria, 'the roof!', which gives her companion an idea. As the creature lumbers towards them, Jamie grabs a piece of timber and uses it to knock out one of the supporting pillars.
The Yeti Roar
The huge creature is halted in its tracks as wood and rock debris crash down on its head.
'Horrible thing,' says a relieved Victoria, dusting herself off. 'What was it?' A claw protrudes from the rubble nearby.
Jamie grabs one of the mysterious silver spheres from the rear of the cave and stuffs it in his pocket. He leads Victoria to the entrance, assuring her that the creature is 'quite dead.'
Victoria looks over her shoulder and realises this is far from the truth. The creature flexes its claw and begins stirring beneath the rubble.
The Doctor is playing Twinkle Twinkle, Little Star on his recorder when Thonmi arrives to take him away. 'What's going on here?' enquires the Doctor.
Thonmi tells him that the monks are besieged by the once passive Yeti. The Doctor surprises him with his knowledge of the events of 1630 AD, another dark period in the monastery's history. 'It was then our holy ghanta was taken from us,' says Thonmi.
'Never mind,' says the Doctor. 'I'm sure it will turn up again.'
The Doctor seeks Thonmi's help in delivering something to Abbot Songsten, but he is led away before he can explain.
Alone inside the room, Thonmi follows the Doctor's advice and examines the straw bedding. He is astonished to find the missing ghanta.
Thonmi kneels in reverence of the holy relic.
As the Yeti bounds down the mountainside, Jamie and Victoria decide to head in the opposite direction in order to warn the Doctor.
Meditation comes to an end, and the monks return to the courtyard.
The Detsen Monks
Rinchen and Khrisong clash over the Doctor's fate. Khrisong angrily questions why he must always consult the Abbot before taking decisive action.
Travers refuses to join the debate and once again accuses the Doctor of being a murderer, before embarking on another exploration.
Sapan and Rinchen are appalled at Khrisong's plan to tie the Doctor to the gate in an attempt to establish his innocence.
'If the Yeti come to rescue him, we will know the truth,' says Khrisong.
Thonmi falls to the ground in reverence as Abbot Songsten appears at his door.
'You know well that only I may enter here,' he tells the young monk.
He falls silent when he sees that Thonmi is bearing a remarkable gift.
'200 years or more it has been lost to us,' booms a disembodied whisper as both men sink to their knees. 'It is the master – Padmasambhava,' says the Abbot.
Thonmi tells the voice that the ghanta was brought by a stranger. 'The Doctor!' rasps the voice. 'So he has returned...' Thonmi nervously approaches Padmasambhava with the holy relic.
'Nobody is going to rescue me,' the Doctor tells Khrisong, 'least of all the Abominable Snowman.'
'If you are innocent,' says Khrisong, 'let us hope we have time to rescue you.'
Warrior monk Ralpachan keeps watch from the safety of a barred window.
A breathless Jamie and Victoria encounter Travers in their search for the Doctor.
'You aren't anything to do with that newspaper fellow I suppose?' asks Travers. Jamie and Victoria convince him they aren't part of a newspaper expedition.
They agree to show Travers the Yeti's cave on the condition that he first takes them to the Detsen monastery.
'Nothing to lose, I suppose,' says Travers, who leads them down the mountainside.
'We are grateful for the return of the holy relic,' intones the disembodied voice of Padmasambhava from behind a screen. 'The Doctor is our friend. He must be treated with respect and kindness.'
Padmasambhava tells Thonmi to find Khrisong. He is to tell Khrisong that the Abbot orders the release of the Doctor.
As Thonmi leaves, the voice tells him that he will forget he has entered the room, and forget that he has spoken to Padmasambhava.
As Thonmi closes the door behind him, his mind clears of the encounter. Inside the room, Padmasambhava's whispers suddenly transform into a malevolent rasp.
'We must make certain that the Doctor learns nothing of what is happening,' says Padmasambhava. 'He may not show sympathy for the powers that guide us. He may even seek to hinder the great plan.'
The Doctor makes a vain attempt to slip out of the noose binding his wrists.
'Something is coming,' observes the excited Palpachan. 'Khrisong – the Yeti! The Yeti!'
It is in fact Jamie, Victoria and Travers that approach the monastery. 'Keep away!' urges the Doctor. 'They'll kill you!'
A humbled Travers tells Khrisong that he was mistaken about the Doctor. Thonmi then tells Khrisong that the Abbot has ordered the Doctor's release.
Khrisong learns that the Doctor has returned the missing ghanta.
Khrisong turns away. 'This wasn't the welcome I expected, you know,' says the Doctor, rubbing his sore wrists.
'Nothing must disturb our preparations,' continues Padmasambhava, adding that the Doctor's life would be in peril if he didn't leave the monastery.
The Doctor examines the sphere as Jamie describes the ordeal with the creature in the cave.
'They wouldn't attack anyone,' says Travers. 'They're shy, elusive creatures.'
'Fear makes us imagine all sorts of things,' says Travers. 'Including creatures that don't seem to be flesh and blood,' adds the Doctor.
As a group of Yeti gather on the mountainside, Khrisong rallies the monks to defend the monastery.
The Yeti's sound
The Doctor asks Khrisong if he could capture one of the Yeti – he would like to examine one.
Jamie volunteers a plan for capturing a Yeti. A nervous Doctor takes Victoria's hand and retreats in disbelief.
The Abbot is reassured by the return of the ghanta, and confident that Khrisong will protect them from the marauding Yeti.
The monks help Jamie prepare his trap as one of the Yeti breaks off from the group and advances towards the monastery.
As the Yeti nears the gate the monks descend on it, clubbing it to the ground.
The Yeti Roar
The monks operate a pulley, surrounding the immobile Yeti in a net.
The two remaining creatures observe the incident, and slowly retreat back up the mountain. The monks haul the captured Yeti through the gates.
They fail to notice a discarded silver sphere, half buried in the dirt. It emits an electronic burbling sound and slowly rolls away.
Yeti Control Sphere
The Doctor's examination reveals that the Yeti is made of metal. 'A devil's warrior,' says Khrisong. 'More like a robot,' says the Doctor.
Inside the Yeti
Wondering why the robot suddenly stopped, the Doctor is intrigued to discover a flap covering its chest. Beneath it is an empty cavity. 'Nothing there,' observes Victoria. 'No,' agrees the Doctor, 'but there has been...'
The sphere outside the monastery gathers pace and begins emitting a piercing bleeping sound. Inside the monastery, the sphere recovered by Jamie begins to bleep in unison. Slowly, it too begins to move...
