The Abominable Snowmen
Episode Three contact sheet
As the sphere outside the gate moves towards the mountains, the sphere beside the statue rolls deeper into the monastery. Both emit a high-pitched bleeping noise.
Yeti Control Sphere
The Doctor deduces that the captured Yeti's control unit has been dislodged. A suspicious Khrisong forbids him from going outside to search for it.
The obstinate Khrisong orders Thonmi to guard the Doctor's party. Travers tells the others he's going to get some sleep.
Khrisong tells Rapalchan: 'No one is to leave the monastery – these Yeti are more dangerous than we thought.'
Travers tells Khrisong that he wants to renew his search for the real abominable snowmen, if only to protect the timid creatures from the threat of the mechanical Yeti.
'Anyone may be controlling these monsters,' Khrisong tells Travers. 'Even you.' Travers is confined to the monastery.
Victoria wonders whether the object she and Jamie found in the cave could be one of the control devices. 'But the thing was as light as a feather,' argues the Doctor. 'There couldn't have been anything inside it.'
The Doctor decides to investigate anyway, but the sphere is nowhere to be found in the courtyard. Ralpachan says he saw no one take it, but adds that Travers has now left the monastery.
The Doctor decides to inform Khrisong, although he remains reluctant to believe that Travers could be implicated. Meanwhile, in a dark shadow of the monastery, the errant sphere continues its journey.
In the meeting room the captured Yeti is trussed inside an elaborate 'spirit trap' of chains. 'Such a being is against nature,' says Sapan. 'It troubles me.'
Abbot Songsten admires the monks' handiwork, while Khrisong and Rinchen bicker over whether the Yeti should ever have been allowed inside the monastery.
'Your task is a hard one,' Songsten tells Khrisong, acknowledging his work in protecting the monastery. 'I shall seek guidance from the master, Padmasambhava.'
The Doctor tells Khrisong that Travers has gone, saying that it was with Khrisong's permission. Khrisong is furious at the deception.
The Abbot seems to talk to himself, and Thonmi explains that he is in a trance, receiving guidance from Padmasambhava. Songsten leaves to meet with the master and Thonmi tells Victoria that to follow him would be out of the question.
Khrisong concedes that it is vital to recover the control sphere outside the monastery and elects to search for it himself. Within the inner sanctum, Padmasambhava reaches for a carved effigy of a Yeti: it rests on a map of the monastery and mountainside.
His ancient hand places the carved Yeti alongside two others.
On the mountainside, Travers watches as two Yeti are joined by a third...
The Yeti's sound
Thonmi bars Victoria's way as she tries to follow the Abbot into the inner sanctum. 'Very well,' says Victoria, 'but I'll get in there somehow.'
Padmasambhava expresses concern over the Doctor's continued presence at the monastery. 'There is a chance he will oppose what we have to do.'
The benevolent whisper becomes a sinister rasp. 'I must now make sure our plan is imperilled no more.' Padmasambhava turns to the map and its Yeti effigies. He moves two of them closer to the monastery.
On the mountainside two of the robots lumber towards the monastery.
The Yeti's sound
Khrisong discovers the half-buried sphere, but it is violently snatched from him by the two Yeti. 'They came to get their ball back,' mutters the Doctor dryly as he, Jamie and Ralpachan take the injured Khrisong back inside.
The Yeti Roar
'It would seem that the Yeti have caused some little upset at the gate,' intones Padmasambhava. 'However, their work is accomplished.' He shows the Abbot three miniature Yeti, which he says are now waiting for him.
He hands Songsten a small transparent pyramid. 'Take it to the caves,' he tells him. 'Then the Great Intelligence will focus upon this planet.'
'Soon it will begin to grow and at last take on physical form. At last its wanderings in space will be at an end.'
'My work will then be done,' he sighs wearily. Songsten grasps the pyramid.
'They didn't come to fight,' explains the Doctor. 'They came for the sphere.' Jamie wonders whether the captured Yeti was sent to retrieve the sphere he took from the cave.
Khrisong says that the sphere emitted a sound, and the Doctor says that this could have been a signal. 'With the right sort of equipment, these signals can be tracked.'
Jamie is intrigued. 'You mean you can find out where the Yeti are getting their instructions from?'
The Doctor tells Khrisong he must return to the mountainside, and the TARDIS, to fetch the equipment. This time the monk offers no resistance.
Thonmi insists on accompanying Victoria as she searches for her friends. 'Afraid I may go somewhere I shouldn't?' she asks. Thonmi goes to join Khrisong, leaving Victoria with Sapan.
Rinchen and Sapan reassure Victoria about the safety of the Doctor and Jamie, but she remains suspicious.
'Your friends are busy helping our brothers,' says Sapan. The two monks leave, suggesting Victoria joins Thonmi in the courtyard.
Victoria pretends to head for the courtyard, but stops when she is sure the two monks are out of earshot.
She quickly turns around and makes her way towards the inner sanctum.
The sphere continues to glide around the monastery unnoticed, making its way towards the meeting room.
Yeti Control Sphere
'There can be no rest for me while the creature is here,' Khrisong tells Thonmi. Rinchen arrives, bringing Victoria with him. 'You must guard this child,' he tells Khrisong.
The two Yeti continue their retreat from the monastery. Travers follows close behind.
The Yeti's sound
Abbot Songsten waves his hand across the guarding Ralpachan's face. Ralpachan immediately enters a trance.
'When I have passed through the gate you will awake,' says Songsten. 'You have seen nothing.'
As Songsten closes the gate behind him, Ralpachan emerges from the trance.
'I suppose everyone thinks I'm a nuisance. Is that it?' Victoria asks Thonmi. He replies that they are merely concerned for her safety.
'I think perhaps you are a little too inquisitive, Miss Victoria.'
Thonmi offers Victoria some food, but as soon as he leaves to prepare it she makes a swift exit.
Three motionless Yeti fail to react to the Doctor and Jamie's presence. After they have left, however, Songsten approaches them and produces the small pyramid. A shrill noise fills the air and the three Yeti suddenly activate.
A nervous Thonmi tells Khrisong that Victoria has disappeared. 'Find her!' orders Khrisong.
Outside the inner sanctum, Victoria hears the calming voice of Padmasambhava. 'It were better that you were not found in here, my child.'
In the meeting room, the sphere glides towards the captured Yeti.
Yeti Control Sphere
The fur flap covering the chest cavity lifts open and the sphere drops into place.
Frightened off by the voice outside the sanctum, Victoria returns to the meeting room.
The Yeti begins to emit an electronic hum as the flap closes over its cavity.
Victoria screams as the Yeti begins to stir.
Breaking its restraining chains with ease, the Yeti rises from the table.
A terrified Victoria shrinks away as the Yeti looms before her...
