'Recaptured again, eh lad?' says Squire Edwards as he levels his flintlock at Ben.

'We'll have no tricks this time,' he warns, advancing on the confused Ben.

Ben points to Cherub and tells the Squire, 'He's the bloke who kidnapped the Doctor!' The Squire dismisses the accusation, and tells Ben not to deface the character of his 'dear friend'. The Squire insists that Pike and Cherub are 'honest merchants'.

'Blake!' exclaims the Squire, hearing the revenue officer's cries for help. The Squire fetches a knife to cut the bonds, and confides in Pike and Cherub that Blake is a revenue officer.

'We'll use him,' says Pike, indicating Ben and Polly. 'Let him take these prisoners, as is his duty.'

As Cherub releases Blake, the Squire tells Ben, 'You've laid hands on one of the King's revenue men, Josiah Blake.' Ben protests that he thought Blake had murdered the churchwarden, but the Squire refuses to listen.

The Squire tells Blake that the young 'vagabonds' murdered Joe Longfoot, and that he should take them to prison. 'I'm a revenue man, sir,' says Blake. 'Not your sheriff.' Cherub suggests that the two prisoners might be smugglers as well.

'We haven't done a thing,' protests Ben. 'We didn't kill anyone, we haven't smuggled anything.' Blake takes the Squire's pistol and reassures him that the two rogues will get the treatment they deserve.

The Squire's party departs, and Blake shepherds his two prisoners out of the crypt. 'Alright: move, villains!'

Aboard the Black Albatross, Jamaica watches as the Doctor offers to tell Kewper's fortune. He tells the innkeeper that he may pick up any five cards from those on the table.

'These cards hold the secret to your life - or death,' warns the Doctor.

'I can tell you that without cards,' sneers Jamaica. 'Death!'

'Do not mock that which you do not understand,' the Doctor tells Jamaica, indicating that he should step back. The Doctor turns over the cards Kewper selected: the Jack of Clubs, the Jack of Spades, the King of Spades, the Ace of Spades and the Jack of Diamonds.

'The first one represents yourself, innkeeper,' says the Doctor. 'I am no knave, sir!' responds Kewper. The Doctor continues: the Jack of Spades - with its dagger - is Master Cherub, the King of Spades represents the King, the blackest villain of them all, and the Ace is death itself - Pike.

'And this one?' asks Kewper, indicating the Jack of Diamonds. 'What is he?' The Doctor admits he has no idea, but adds, 'I can assure you he will triumph in the end.'

'Tis all madness,' says Kewper, but Jamaica is not so sure, and asks the Doctor if the cards could predict the future for him. 'Aren't you afraid?' asks the Doctor.

'Jamaica ain't afraid!' says the pirate, stepping forward to choose five cards from the pack.

The Doctor fumbles, letting the cards slip through his fingers. As Jamaica stoops to retrieve them, Kewper chops him on the back of the head, knocking him unconscious. The pirate slumps to the ground, and the Doctor tells Kewper to tie him up.

Kewper congratulates the Doctor on the ruse, and the two decide to head for the mainland. Kewper cunningly suggests they should contact the Squire, who will surely release the Doctor's friends when he is made aware of their innocence. The Doctor agrees.

'In these dark days honesty surely pays,' says Kewper, and he and the Doctor emerge on to the deck, carefully avoiding a group pf crew-members huddled over a game of cards.

Kewper takes the Doctor to his boat, and rows him back to the shore.

'I wish it were always so easy to guide the officers of the Revenue,' laughs Pike, delighted that Ben and Polly are now in Blake's custody. In the graveyard of the church, Pike and Cherub begin flattering the Squire.

'Rid of both law and villainy,' continues Pike. 'Indeed sir Squire, I find myself trusting ye more and more.' Cherub adds that with the Squire to lead them they cannot fail. The Squire is suitably flattered, and offers to surprise them further.

Pike and Cherub watch closely as the Squire triggers a secret mechanism on the side of a tomb.

The lid of a sarcophagus slides open to reveal a treasure trove of contraband. 'The grave holds its secrets, eh?' smiles the Squire. 'Silks, tobaccos and brandy, Captain. This is our immediate cache, you understand.'

'Then where are we to place our merchandise?' asks Pike.

'Upon the beach,' replies the Squire, 'where you will be met. This is our domain, the sea is yours. Our routes and methods must remain our own. But have no fear - this will be emptied before tomorrow's tide.'

Later, at the Squire's hall, the details of the plan are finalised. The Squire tells Pike that at two in the morning a beacon will be lit to guide him to the shore. A second fire will be lit close by if there is any danger.

The Squire offers to settle the details of payment over wine and food, and as the two men set off Cherub emerges from behind a nearby bush.

Blake marches Ben and Polly to the stables of the inn. Once they are inside, he advances on Ben with a knife in his hand. Ben is astonished when Blake uses the knife to cut the ropes that bind him.

Blake says he is still slightly unsure of them, but says he would rather trust their word than the Squire's. Ben and Polly are relieved to find someone who finally believes them. 'As long as you're against the Squire and those other two layabouts we're with you,' Ben tells Blake.

'Word of mouth has it that the Squire rules the smuggling ring,' says Blake, 'but as yet I have no proof.' Ben and Polly offer to help, but Blake says he needs to call upon armed men - he expects another delivery to be made soon and he is setting a trap.

Blake says he can only spring the trap if he can muster reinforcements soon. He asks Ben and Polly whether the Doctor would be useful to him. 'The Doctor may not be a soldier,' says Polly, 'but he's jolly crafty at getting himself out of trouble. At least, he was when we were in London.'

'And why not here my dear?' says the Doctor, swinging open the stable door. When Polly has calmed down the Doctor explains that he escaped from the Black Albatross with Kewper.

'But he's in with the Squire!' exclaims Ben. 'Kewper is thought to be deeply involved, and he knows me,' adds Blake, shortly before Kewper follows the Doctor into the stable. Kewper confirms that Cherub murdered the churchwarden. Blake explains that Cherub is now embroiled in further villainy with the Squire.

Upon seeing Blake, Kewper accuses the Doctor of being a revenue spy and pulls a gun. He says he will show no pity the next time they meet, and dashes outside to find his horse.

Blake follows him out, but Kewper is already astride his horse. Blake fires a shot but Kewper's horse gallops away from the yard.

Aboard The Black Albatross, Pike is enraged to discover the Doctor and Kewper gone. 'Cap'n, they tricked me into it!' says a terrified Jamaica, pleading for his life. 'I'll tear your liver out and feed it to the sharks, you sea slime!' spits Pike.

'The old man, Cap'n,' says Jamaica. 'He cast a spell on me - I swear it!'

'It was the black arts, Cap'n. Spare me, Cap'n, spare me!' Pike demands to know where the two prisoners made for.

'I heard them speak Cap'n - they said about going to see the Squire.'

'That buffoon,' says Pike. 'What good'll he be to 'em?' Pike doubts that the Squire would call the militia, but agrees with Jamaica's suggestion that he might lay a trap.

Eager to please his Captain, Jamaica suggests that they surprise the Squire. Pike decides to land during the day, well ahead of the agreed two o'clock rendezvous. 'Some will go straight to the church and loot the smugglers' hoard,' says Pike. 'Me and Cherub will seek Avery's gold.'

'It will be a merry night,' says Pike, turning to Jamaica. 'But not for ye.'

Pike advances on the terrified Jamaica, and drives his spike deep into him. Jamaica's scream is soon cut short. Pike withdraws the blade, and wipes off the blood with a lace handkerchief.

Pike drops the bloodied handkerchief on to Jamaica's corpse before going above deck. He soon discovers that Cherub is not aboard.

The Doctor hypothesises that Pike intends to ransack the church and search for Avery's treasure. 'Help is desperately needed if these pirates are to be thwarted,' says an anxious Blake.

Blake thinks Kewper telling the Squire about Pike may have bought him enough time to summon men in arms. When Tom fetches his horse, he rides off straight away. Inside the stable, Ben tells the Doctor about the secret passage leading directly to the TARDIS.

Back to the TARDIS?

Ben and Polly are ready to leave for the safety of the TARDIS, but the Doctor has other plans. 'I'm under moral obligation,' he explains. 'It's this village. I feel that I might be responsible for its destruction and therefore I must at least try and avoid this danger until Blake comes back.'

The Doctor reveals that Joe Longfoot gave him a clue to the whereabouts of Avery's treasure. 'If we are able to find that treasure first, we might be able to bargain!' says the Doctor, claiming that will give them enough time to wait for Blake and to save the people of the village. Ben reluctantly agrees and they head for the church.

Kewper arrives at the Squire's house as Tom bids farewell to the Doctor's party. He is about to head back inside the stable when he is jumped by Cherub, who holds a knife to the boy's throat. 'They've gone, haven't they Tom? Be a good lad and tell me where, eh?'

'I've been tricked,' says a crestfallen Squire as Kewper explains that the smuggler he is in alliance with is in fact the notorious Captain Pike.

Kewper suggests they can turn the situation to their advantage, and tells the Squire that Pike's principal interest is in Avery's gold. He explains that Longfoot was once one of Pike's crew, and that Pike now believes that the gold is hidden beneath the church.

The Squire is enthused by the thought of the gold, but keen to avoid any bloodshed in claiming it. Kewper suggests setting a trap for Pike, using the contraband in the tomb as bait. 'Twenty hidden muskets and they are done for!' exclaims Kewper as they set off for the church.

As they mount their horses, Kewper explains that only the Doctor knows Longfoot's secret. 'We will admit no other soul into this but ourselves,' says the Squire. 'Avery's gold - snatched clean from them!'

As Kewper and the Squire ride to the church to search for Avery's gold, Blake continues his high-speed journey in search of reinforcements.

In the graveyard, the Doctor ponders the true meaning of Longfoot's riddle while Ben and Polly amuse themselves by searching for the oldest tombstone.

Listening to Ben and Polly reading out the names on the tombstones helps the Doctor realise that the 'Deadman's secret' part of Longfoot's rhyme referred to the names of those buried in the crypt. Immediately inspired, the Doctor enters the church.

Inside the crypt, the Doctor recites the rhyme: 'Deadman's secret key - Ringwood, Smallbeer and Gurney.' Ben activates the secret mechanism and shows the Doctor the tunnel. Soon after Polly finds Ringwood's grave, Ben finds Gurney's and the Doctor finds Smallbeer's.

The Squire and Kewper arrive at the church and are intrigued to find the vestry door open. 'Could it be this pestiferous Doctor?' asks the Squire.

'If it is then providence is on our side,' says Kewper, 'for he holds the secret of the treasure, of that I'm sure.'

The Doctor thinks out loud, wondering if they should be looking for a fourth name. 'Tell us!' demands Kewper, descending the steps into the crypt.

The Squire formally introduces himself to the Doctor and claims he is there to forestall Pike. 'And line your own pockets,' says Ben. 'Yeah, fine magistrate you are!'

'I hope you don't expect me to help you,' says the Doctor. 'You'll talk,' replies the Squire. Kewper threatens Ben and Polly but the Squire clearly feels he is going too far, protesting, 'I will not kill in cold blood!'

The Squire and Kewper argue over the best way of making the Doctor talk. Meanwhile, Cherub enters the crypt unnoticed. He carries a knife and a pistol.

The argument between the Squire and Kewper grows ever more furious until Cherub expertly throws his knife. The blade embeds itself between Kewper's shoulder blades.

As Kewper slumps to the ground a pistol shot echoes around the crypt. A horrified Polly lets out a shrill scream...
