02
As the Dalek bears down on him, the Doctor tries to warn the colonists that the Daleks are dedicated to the destruction of all human life.

03
'I am your servant! I am your servant!' chants the Dalek, drowning out the Doctor.

04
The colonists marvel at the wonderful robot's charms.

05
The scientist Lesterson enthuses to governor Hensell about the machine's obvious intelligence.

06
Security chief Bragen can already see the Daleks as the solution to all the colony's problems. Hensell is more concerned with how grateful Earth will be.

07
The Doctor, in his guise of an Examiner from Earth, vows to stop them.

08
The Dalek trains its eye-stalk on the Doctor.

09
It watches without comment as he demands that all Daleks are destroyed.

10
The Doctor orders the Dalek to deactivate itself. It hesitates, but obeys...

11
It springs back to life as soon as he leaves the room.

12
The Dalek explains to the surprised colonists that it cannot obey them if it is switched off. Lesterson is delighted with its answer.

13
The Doctor storms off down the corridor with Ben and Polly. One thing they are all agreed on is that the Daleks are the biggest threat to the colony.

14
With the Dalek out of the way, deputy governor Quinn's trial for rebellion continues.

15
Bragen lays out the evidence again. Quinn was found in the sabotaged communications room, and his button was found at the scene of the attack on the Doctor.

16
Quinn makes a startling confession: it was he who had summoned the Examiner in the first place, so why should he attack the Doctor?

17
Governor Hensell is appalled by this admission from his deputy.

18
Quinn protests that he was worried by the rebels, but such betrayal only damns him further in Hensell's eyes. Quinn is taken away.

19
Bragen assures the Governor that this is sad proof of Quinn wanting to become governor.

20
Hensell agrees, promptly giving Quinn's old job to Bragen.

21
The Doctor is tearing his quarters apart.

22
Smashing equipment frantically, he tears components from the wreckage, piecing together a device.

23
Ben and Polly look on, marvelling at the chaos the Doctor is creating.

24
As the Doctor builds his device, he explains his fears.

25
The colonists won't let him destroy the Daleks, and he can't let the Daleks destroy the colony.

26
Maybe the Doctor's device can solve the problem...

27
Lesterson is testing the Dalek in his laboratory.

28
He is amazed by how much the machine knows.

29
While his assistant Janley takes a secretive phone call, the Doctor enters.

30
The Doctor seems keen to help Lesterson in his experiments, and make amends for his earlier bad impression.

31
The Doctor uses the opportunity to install his device.

32
The device tampers with the Dalek's power source, disorienting the creature and infuriating Lesterson. Lesterson smashes the Doctor's device, and orders the eccentric examiner out of his laboratory.

33
'I have sustained no damage,' reports the Dalek, tracking the Doctor with its non-existent gun stick.

34
Janley has hurried away to keep a secret meeting.

35
It is with Bragen, who is thrilled at his new job. The two are working together to bring down Hensell's governorship.

36
The Daleks could be just what Bragen needs - especially now that Janley has brought him a Dalek gun.

37
Their only problem is the Examiner, and Janley knows how she can solve that problem ...

38
Janley intercepts Polly, telling her to meet the Examiner in the communications room.

39
Polly goes to the darkened room, looking for the Doctor.

40
She is attacked by one of the rebels, Valmar.

41
Janley helps Valmar render Polly unconscious. Now they have everything they need to keep the Examiner quiet.

42
Janley gives Valmar the Dalek gun, and orders him to adapt it for their use.

43
Ben is worried by Polly's disappearance. He convinces the Doctor to stop playing his recorder and go searching for her.

44
Lesterson is learning that there is nothing he can teach the Dalek. 'A Dalek is bett... is not the same as a human,' the machine announces.

45
It offers to build a better meteorite defence grid for the colony. All Lesterson has to do is to supply it with equipment... and power.

46
Outside Lesterson's laboratory, the Doctor notices the scientist rushing off to find the Governor.

47
Ben and the Doctor enter the lab to find it deserted - except for a mass of cables trailing into the Dalek ship.

48
Something's going on inside the capsule. The Doctor is eager to explore...

49
... but a Dalek glides out, blocking their path.

50
Mockingly, the Doctor tries to make it obey him.

51
It is joined by another Dalek. This one has a weapon.

52
The Dalek has reactivated the other two fully-armed Daleks from the capsule. The Doctor orders Ben to 'Run, run like a rabbit!' - he isn't far behind.

53
Left alone, the three Daleks gloat that soon they will have power and conquest.

54
The Doctor bursts into the Governor's office, outraged that the other two Daleks have been brought to life. The Governor rejects his protests - Lesterson and the Daleks can do what they want.

55
Despondent, the Doctor and Ben return to their quarters. Ben is worried about Polly.

56
Bragen enters. The Doctor ignores him, concentrating on playing his recorder.

57
Bragen demands to know who the Doctor really is. If he's not the Earth Examiner, is he a rebel friend of Quinn's?

58
Bragen goes on to explain that his men have found a body in the mercury swamps ... that of the real Examiner.

59
The Doctor is gleeful. The only way Bragen could know that the murdered man is the real Examiner is if Bragen had killed him in the first place. Caught out, Bragen leaves, warning the Doctor to leave Lesterson and the Daleks alone.

60
After Bragen leaves, the travellers receive a note under their door.

61
It tells them Polly is safe... as long as they leave the Daleks alone.

62
Back in his laboratory, Lesterson is ensuring all the Daleks are disarmed.

63
All three Daleks join him, asking him if Hensell has agreed to give them materials... and power.

64
Lesterson nods. 'Everything you need you can have.'

65
The Daleks are jubilant. 'We will get our power! We will get our power! We will get our power!'

NEXT: Will Lesterson realise the true power of the Daleks?
