02
Exhausted by his battle with the Cybermen, the Doctor lies on the floor of the TARDIS, his whole body glowing with a strange light.

03
As his companions, Ben and Polly, watch amazed, the glow fades.

04
The Doctor has changed.

The TARDIS aids the regeneration

05
The Doctor had said, 'This old body of mine is wearing a bit thin...', but neither Ben nor Polly had understood what he meant.

06
Can this new, younger figure really be the Doctor?

07
Ben and Polly stand over the strange body.

08
Neither the Chelsea girl nor the cockney sailor really know what to do.

09
The man on the floor groans.

10
He tries to focus on Ben and Polly, moaning in pain.

11
His senses overwhelmed, he wails 'Concentrate on one thing ... one thing.'

12
He fixes on the TARDIS control console, and his disorientation gradually fades.

13
He looks around himself, tentatively.

14
Slumping over the controls, he dematerialises the TARDIS.

15
'Doctor?' Ben asks. The man reacts, puzzled. He's still wearing the Doctor's ring, but it doesn't fit. The ring falls to the floor.

16
Polly's sure it's the Doctor, but Ben isn't convinced. He's not just a younger version - he's an entirely different person.

17
The man shoves a mirror into Ben's hands, curious to see his own reflection.

18
For an instant, he sees the original Doctor staring back at him from the mirror.

19
Suddenly distracted, the man stares in alarm at a piece of alien metal he's found. 'Extermination,' he mutters.

20
The stranger's odd behaviour isn't endearing him to Ben. Since the Doctor's old ring doesn't fit him, he can't be the Doctor.

21
'I'd like to see a butterfly fit into its chrysalis case after it's spread its wings.' the Doctor retorts.

22
Filled with childish glee, the stranger flicks through the Doctor's 500 year diary, before deciding to go exploring.

23
The TARDIS has landed on the planet Vulcan.

Mercury swamps on Vulcan

24
Thick vapour bubbles up from the planet's mercury swamps.

25
The Doctor is immersed in his 500 year diary...

26
... oblivious to the poison swamps he's wandering through.

27
Nearby, a man hears the Doctor approach. He's an Examiner from earth, come to investigate the nearby human colony.

28
As the Doctor steps forward to greet him, the Examiner is shot dead.

29
Anxious, the Doctor leans over the body, curiously pocketing the Examiner's seal of authority.

30
The Doctor is unaware of a figure creeping up behind him, a gun trained on his back.

31
Hearing a noise, the Doctor wheels round, and the figure hides.

32
Ben and Polly are looking at a nearby quicksilver swamp. Polly is overcome by a cloud of poison vapour. Ben cries out for help.

33
Distracted by Ben's shout, the Doctor is knocked unconscious by the figure in white.

34
The figure runs away, having placed a stray button in the Doctor's hand.

35
The poisonous gas is too much for Ben, and he collapses.

36
Minutes later, the Doctor is rescued by Quinn and Bragen. Quinn is deputy governor of the colony. He doesn't much trust Bragen, the thuggish chief of security. Both men are seeking the Earth Examiner, whose ship crashlanded nearby. They assume the Doctor is the Examiner.

37
Two of Bragen's men arrive with Ben and Polly. Quinn leads them all back to the colony.

38
Inside the colony, a scientist called Lesterton is working away feverishly in his laboratory.

39
Much of the space is taken up by a vast alien craft.

40
Lesterton is working at cleaning up a piece of metal from the sealed ship. It's been buried in the mercury swamp for at least 200 years. His assistant Janley comes in to tell him of the Examiner's arrival.

41
She warns him that the Examiner has come to inspect Lesterton's recovered capsule and prevent him from working on it.

42
Janley's also part of the colony's underground movement. She tells Lesterton he may need their help.

43
The Doctor, Ben and Polly are sat in quarters in the colony, the Doctor playing away on a recorder. Much to Ben's infuriation, the Doctor seems intent on pretending to be the Examiner, whilst trying to find out who killed him.

44
A guard opens the door.

45
Hensell, the colony's governor introduces himself. He's anxious to know why the Examiner is here.

46
Is it to investigate the colony's resistance groups, or the strange alien capsule found in the swamps? The Doctor is evasive.

47
Ben and Polly are bemused by the Doctor's eccentric behaviour. At least one person isn't fooled by the Doctor's impersonation of the Examiner ...

48
... whoever murdered the real Examiner.

49
Later that night, Quinn is arguing with Bragen. Quinn is alarmed that he's not allowed to see the Examiner without the governor's permission. He suspects Bragen is involved.

50
Quinn storms off, bumping into Janley. She has been herded out of Lesterton's laboratory while the Examiner inspects it. Quinn hurries away.

51
The Doctor is examining Lesterton's capsule in front of Governor Hensell.

52
Lesterton is enthusing about the scrap of metal he recovered from the craft, which he's dying to open.

53
The Doctor is worried - it's exactly the same as the metal he found in the TARDIS.

54
Using a laser, Lesterton is able to override the capsule's door mechanism.

55
Lesterton and the Doctor enter a tiny ante-chamber.

56
After looking round curiously, the Doctor decides that's quite far enough for one night.

57
The 'Examiner' storms off, taking his companions with him, leaving the others puzzled by his erratic behaviour.

58
Hensell accuses Lesterton of calling in the Examiner. Lesterton denies it.

59
Ben is trying to settle down for the night, but there's a knock at his door.

60
It's Polly - she's heard the Doctor leave his room. They creep after him.

61
The Doctor has headed straight for the capsule.

62
By the time Ben and Polly reach the darkened laboratory, the Doctor is already inside the craft, fitting Lesterton's scrap of metal into a hole in its wall.

63
An interior door springs open. Aware that he's not alone, the Doctor calls out grimly to his companions: 'Ben, Polly, come and meet...'

Meet the Daleks (montage with audio)

64
'... The Daleks.'

65
Two Daleks sit inside the craft, covered in dust and cobwebs.

66
The Doctor isn't surprised. 'I knew I should find them here, I knew it.'

67
He's puzzled: there were three Daleks in the capsule. One has been removed. Suddenly, Polly cries out...

68
... as a strange, alien shape scuttles across the corner of the room.

NEXT WEEK: Are the Daleks far from dormant?
