The Ice Warriors
Episode Four contact sheet
Victoria is framed squarely in the weapon's sights. 'Ready to fire,' hisses Zondal. Varga reaches forward and operates the controls.
The cannon retracts into the hull of the ship. 'Not yet,' Varga tells an incredulous Zondal. 'She is the bait...'
Victoria continues to tell the Doctor about the alien warriors, explaining that they are from Mars. Clent is uninterested: 'Have you seen the propulsion unit in the spacecraft, girl?'
Victoria is baffled by the question, but reports that the creatures are repairing the engines. She begins sobbing when an impatient Clent presses her for further details.
The Doctor is more considerate, and patiently asks Victoria to describe what the engines look like.
Victoria begins to compose herself when the image of her face on the screen breaks up.
'She has told them enough,' decides Varga. 'Bring her in.'
'Why are they so interested in our engines?' he thinks out loud. 'Why are they so afraid?'
The communications link is restored in time for Victoria to tell the Doctor that someone is approaching. The Doctor tells her to head back to the base.
Turoc emerges from the ship and Victoria hides from his view.
The shifting glaciers send shards of fragmented ice raining down as Victoria makes her way further into the ravine.
Rubbing her hands in an effort to keep warm, she looks over her shoulder to see the warrior lumbering towards her.
Chased through the ice caves
The Doctor exasperates Clent by using the automatic chemical dispenser to create a refreshing cup of water.
The Doctor uses the dial on the machine to input another chemical formula and holds up the result - a phial of ammonium sulphide. He asks Clent and Miss Garrett what they know about the Martian atmosphere.
'Chiefly nitrogen with virtually no oxygen or hydrogen,' says Miss Garrett. The Doctor explains that his chemical concoction will prove highly toxic if used aboard their spaceship.
'I refuse to allow you to go,' says Clent, arguing that the Doctor cannot be spared.
'It's as simple as this,' says the Doctor. 'Someone has to get to the spacecraft, find out what sort of propulsion unit it has and bring the information back to you, or we can't use the ioniser. Who better than me?'
The Doctor takes a wrist communicator, but refuses any armaments. 'This is my defense,' he beams, holding up the ammonium sulphide. Miss Garrett is slack-jawed as the Doctor explains that he intends to let the Martians take him prisoner.
Victoria breaks through a wall of ice to escape the pursuing warrior, but loses her wrist communicator along the way. Retracing her steps she soon spots the Martian, who effortlessly punches through the remaining debris.
Victoria hides and the creature seems to overlook her, but as she stoops to retrieve her communicator it grips her tightly with one of its claws. As Victoria struggles, the pair are deluged with falling snow and ice.
'His fever's gone,' says Storr, touching Jamie's brow.
Penley remains concerned about the effect the alien weaponry may have had on their patient. 'Scientifically designed of course,' says Storr.
Jamie jolts awake in a state of confusion, but soon gets on friendly terms with Storr. When he learns of Victoria's fate he immediately resolves to rescue her.
Jamie stumbles to the ground. Penley grimly informs him that the Martians' weapon must have affected his central nervous system. 'You mean I'm paralysed?' asks Jamie.
Varga retreats, tortoise-like, into his armour as the hunt for Victoria continues.
Zondal reports that Turoc has yet to locate the girl. Varga responds by saying that he intends to use Victoria as bait to lure 'an intelligent being' from the base in the hope that they will discover what type of reactor the humans use.
Varga reveals that if the humans' base uses compatible fuel elements then they will seize what they need to replenish their own exhausted supply.
Varga tells Zondal that if the human scientists melt the ice there will be no hope for their ship's engine - and no hope for them. 'The gun is our only chance,' concludes Zondal.
Turoc is killed by the avalanche, but Victoria remains stuck in his vice-like grip. Her screams for help bring more ice crashing down.
Penley applies a tranquilliser pad to Jamie's aching head as the Scotsman slips back into unconsciousness.
Penley is baffled by Jamie's condition. Storr suggests that one way to save Jamie could be to befriend the aliens.
Penley reminds Storr that they killed Arden. 'They're ruthless - they place no value on human life.'
Penley suggests taking Jamie to the base, but Storr is adamant that he can reason with the warriors.
Storr embarks upon the journey to the alien vessel with Penley's voice ringing in his ears.
Pressing himself against a wall of ice, Storr grabs a rock, ready to defend himself. He drops it when he hears Victoria's cries for help.
As Storr heads off in the direction of the sound, an anxious Penley follows in his wake.
Gingerly avoiding a small avalanche of rocks and ice, Penley continues his search for Storr.
The Doctor is rummaging through the contents of Jamie's bag when Penley stumbles into view.
'Oh it's you again,' says the Doctor, before Penley asks if anyone has passed that way. The Doctor says he has seen no-one. 'Then I'm too late,' laments the Scientist.
The Doctor offers Penley his help, assuring him: 'I don't believe everything Clent tells me.'
The Doctor is delighted to learn that Jamie is alive. Penley leads the Doctor back to the conservatory.
Storr releases Victoria from Turoc's frozen grasp, and asks the girl why she was running away. 'They're evil,' says Victoria. 'I think they want to destroy the base.'
Victoria tells him that the warriors think the ioniser is a threat to them. 'Aye, it's true,' says Storr, peering at the dead Turoc, 'a weapon of destruction. It will destroy civilisation.'
Storr explains that Jamie is alive, but desperately ill. 'I'm going for help.'
Before Storr can tell Victoria exactly where he is going, they are forced back into the ravine by another avalanche.
The Martians realign the cannon, carefully aiming the device towards the base. They withdraw as Storr drags a reluctant Victoria into the cavern. 'You'll be safe,' he insists. 'They'll listen to me.'
Victoria tells Varga that Turoc was crushed by the falling ice. Varga is furious, and places his claws around the girl's throat. 'You ran away,' he hisses, 'and because of that one of my men is dead.'
Victoria is taken inside the ship while Storr readily admits that he knows nothing of the scientists' machines. 'What good are you to us?' sneers Varga. Storr backs away in terror as the warriors advance.
'I want to help you!' he pleads, but it is too late. Varga and Zondal flex their claws and the air contorts with a searing energy.
Storr screams in agony and falls to the ground. Leaving his lifeless body, the two warriors return to their ship to question Victoria.
The Doctor cheerfully reassures Jamie that he will be able to walk again, but privately tells Penley that Jamie should really receive treatment at the base.
The glacier advances again, sending glass and debris crashing down. The Doctor asks Penley to take Jamie to the base while he continues his journey to the warriors' ship.
Clent nervously notes the glacier's latest movement but refuses to make a decision about using the ioniser. 'We still don't know enough about the alien reactor.'
'But suppose we never know?' asks Miss Garrett. 'Suppose the Doctor never returns?' As they debate the risks, the Doctor's face appears on the communications screen. 'Here we go Clent, old chap,' he says. 'Wish me luck.'
The Doctor ducks down as another ice fall threatens his progress. Banging on the door of the Martian ship he shouts, 'Anyone at home?'
He notices the cannon, and examines the barrel as it extends from the hull. Soon after, the door of the ship slides open and the Doctor strides aboard.
'Who are you?' demands Varga from a nearby video screen. The Doctor refuses to answer until he's addressed properly. Varga reminds the Doctor that he is standing in the vessel's air lock. 'Unless you answer my questions within ten seconds I will take the atmospheric pressure around you down to zero.'
'But of you do that my body will explode!' protests the Doctor. Varga emits a rasping, hissing laugh. As the pressure gauge begins to drop he slowly counts, 'One... two... three... four...'
NEXT WEEK: The Doctor bargains with Varga.
