The Faceless Ones
Episode Two contact sheet
The medical centre at Gatwick Airport lies empty, awaiting a very unusual patient.
Screens surround the examination table, ensuring the privacy of an extra-terrestrial visitor.
A shambling creature, draped in a long coat, reclines on the table.
An unconscious air traffic controller called Meadows lies nearby.
The girl claims her name is Michelle, and says she is from Zurich.
Michelle shows the Commandant her passport and work permit.
Satisfied that Michelle is telling the truth, the Commandant decides to deal with the Doctor and Jamie. While he calls Superintendent Reynolds the Doctor and Jamie make a run for it.
'Quick, he's suffocating,' says Blade, keeping a watchful eye on the patient. 'You were 20 minutes late,' chides Nurse Pinto. She passes metallic armbands to Blade and Spencer.
Blade attaches an armband to Meadows, while Spencer puts the other armband on the creature.
The nurse activates a machine as Blade gazes down at Meadows with disdain. 'He may be useful to us.'
The creature on the neighbouring table is attached to the same machine.
Jamie and the Doctor hide behind newspapers as two policemen walk past. When the policemen have gone, the Doctor reads from an advertisement in the newspaper. 'Chameleon Youth Tours - budget tours for young people between the ages of 18 and 25.'
The Doctor explains that a chameleon is a lizard that can change colour to merge with its background. 'But it's a name that could equally apply to people as well – people who change their personalities to suit their own ends.' Ben rushes in and tells the Doctor he has found a place to hide.
In the medical centre the process continues.
The Chameleon's shapeless features begin to change...
... until it becomes an exact replica of Meadows.
The machinery's electronic noise abruptly stops and the process is complete. The Chameleon is now indistinguishable from Meadows.
The Chameleon sits up and the nurse points to a chart on the wall. The Chameleon reads the letters out in slurred, laboured speech.
'Vocal control,' says Nurse Pinto, and a dial on the creature's armband is altered. The Chameleon's speech suddenly becomes clear and precise.
Blade consults Meadows' personnel file as he asks the Chameleon a number of questions. 'Who are you?' he asks. 'My name is George Meadows,' the Chameleon replies. 'Where do you live?' asks Blade. 'No. 10 Sylvia Avenue. Until last week we lived at no. 34.'
'I've been too busy to tell the personnel department of the change,' smiles the Chameleon Meadows. 'Excellent,' says Blade.
'Look,' says Ben. 'There's Polly!' The Doctor is intrigued to notice that 'Michelle' works on the Chameleon Tours kiosk.
The Doctor tries to jog Polly's memory, reminding her of the events she witnessed in the Chameleon hangar.
'I think you're mad,' she says. 'If I'd seen anyone shot I'd have gone to the police.' The Doctor responds: 'Anyone shot?'
'I didn't say anyone was shot or murdered,' says the Doctor, lowering his voice. Polly falters, confused by the memory.
As the Doctor and Ben ponder what has happened to Polly, she is summoned by Blade. 'Circumstances are against you,' he says. 'I'll make arrangements for you to leave on the next flight.'
'Meadows' returns to his position at air traffic control.
Detective Inspector Crossland arrives from Scotland Yard. He questions the Commandant about the missing Inspector Gascoigne.
The Commandant leaves Jean Rock to deal with the Inspector.
Inspector Crossland tells Jean that Gascoigne was himself investigating a disappearance when he vanished.
'What shall I say your business is?' asks Jean, making notes in an official log. 'Investigation into Chameleon Youth Tours,' replies the officer.
Ben takes the Doctor and Jamie to his hiding place.
It's a photo booth. They huddle inside and Ben draws the curtain. The Doctor ponders Polly's condition, and concludes that there wasn't time for her to be brainwashed.
Pausing to have their picture taken, the Doctor is frustrated that they're not free to move around the airport and conduct their own investigation. Ben points out that the authorities aren't looking for him, and volunteers to investigate Chameleon himself.
The Doctor asks Jamie to return to the Chameleon Tours kiosk and keep an eye on Michelle.
Brassy Scouser Samantha Briggs arrives at the Chameleon Tours kiosk to enquire after her brother Brian. 'He went on one of your tours and now he's disappeared.'
Samantha says the police cannot find her brother anywhere in Rome – although a postcard indicated that he had in fact been there. 'It does seem odd doesn't it,' says Michelle feebly.
'What did you say your brother's name was?' asks Michelle. 'Brian Briggs,' replies Samantha.
'Would you like me to spell it for you?' she asks sarcastically.
Michelle goes to a room behind the Chameleon kiosk and tries to contact Captain Blade. 'I must speak with him urgently – enquiries about a missing passenger.'
'Stuck up thing!' scowls Samantha, sitting down next to Jamie, who has been listening to the conversation. 'She just couldn't care less!'
'About finding your brother?' asks Jamie, who suggests that the Doctor might he able to help her.
A policeman walks past and Jamie hastily raises his newspaper.
'There's a gentleman to see you,' Jean tells the Commandant. 'Did he say what about?' he asks absent-mindedly.
'It's about a dead body,' she says. The Commandant sighs. 'Bring him in.'
The Commandant picks up the phone as soon as the Doctor walks in. 'Airport police please.'
'At least hear what I have to say,' says the Doctor. 'There was a dead body in the Chameleon Tours hangar.'
'Chameleon Tours?' asks Jean. Before they can continue two policemen arrive.
The Doctor, holding something aloft, shouts, 'One step closer and I'll blow you all to smithereens!' He throws the object to the Commandant and makes his getaway. The Commandant realises he has caught a rubber ball. 'All right,' he sighs. 'After him.'
"Catch!"
'As soon as you've got rid of the girl, close the kiosk and get on the next flight,' Blade tells Michelle.
'If I were you I'd go back to Liverpool,' Michelle tells Samantha. 'I'm sure your brother will turn up eventually.'
'There's something funny going on here,' Samantha tells Jamie.
In the Chameleon Tours hangar Ben finds a number of large packing crates.
He opens one of them up and is horrified to find a catatonic Polly inside.
Ben runs up the steps to the office, and tries to get put through to the Commandant's office so he can speak to the Doctor.
Meanwhile, the Doctor looks for Polly in the room behind the Chameleon Tours kiosk. There is no sign of her, but a finds a number of postcards and unused foreign stamps. The Doctor switches on a monitor and sees an image of Ben pleading with the Commandant.
The Doctor is powerless to help as Spencer places Ben in a trance. Spencer looks up to see the Doctor calling out to Ben from another monitor.
Crossland shows Jenkins pictures of Brian Briggs and Inspector Gascoigne, but Jenkins is unable to recall either of them.
A voice on the airport tannoy announces the departure of the Chameleon Youth Tours flight to Zurich.
A Chameleon tours representative hands out some postcards of Zurich, just in case the passengers don't have time to fill them in when they reach Switzerland. 'Give them back to me, and we'll post them for you in Zurich.'
Samantha realises that the postcard she received from her brother may not have been sent by him at all. They get up to find the Doctor, but Inspector Crossland stops Jamie in his tracks. 'Just a minute son – I want a word with you.'
Inside the Chameleon Tours hangar the Doctor finds the pen-like device used to stun Ben. He opens a packing crate and discovers Meadows inside. Bloodied bandages are wrapped around his forearm.
A disembodied voice cries, 'Help me... please! I'm suffocating!' The Doctor follows the voice up the steps and into the adjoining office. The door locks behind him and he is trapped.
A hatch opens in the wall and gas pours into the room.
The temperature drops rapidly and the Doctor wraps his coat around him. The gas fills the air and the Doctor begins to freeze…
