4
As the TARDIS is revealed, the Doctor realises that he has been out-manoeuvred. The Emperor's voice reverberates across the control room as it issues its orders: the Doctor is to take the Dalek Factor and spread it through the entire history of Earth.

5
The Doctor, Jamie and Waterfield are horrified. The Doctor refuses, saying that he can't be forced to do it. The Emperor orders him to obey. The Black Dalek herds them out of the room.

6
Another Black Dalek visits one of its minions in a room dominated by a large device. A Dalek tells its superior that the experiment is ready. The Black Dalek orders it to proceed. The Dalek activates the device, which starts to glow...

7
The Doctor, Jamie and Waterfield are imprisoned in the cell already occupied by Kemel, Victoria and Maxtible. The Doctor plays his recorder while Maxtible explains that the Daleks promised to show him how to turn metal into gold.

8
The Doctor tells Maxtible that Daleks don't keep their promises.

9
Maxtible insists that the secret of alchemy will be his.

10
Jamie threatens Maxtible, telling him that the secret won't be any use once he'd finished with him. Maxtible is defiant, and Jamie lunges at him, gripping him by his lapels.

11
The Dalek keeping guard enters into the cell and warns Jamie not to harm Maxtible. The Dalek threatens Jamie with extermination, so he reluctantly backs off.

12
The Dalek leaves and Maxtible begins scribbling calculations in his notebook. Waterfield comments on the fact that the Daleks seem prepared to protect him. He asks Maxtible if his relationship with the Daleks might offer them a means of escape.

13
Maxtible ignores Waterfield's appeal and resumes scribbling his calculations. The Doctor plays his recorder, seemingly oblivious to the drama unfolding on the other side of the cell.

14
The Doctor tells Victoria that there's nothing the Daleks can do to persuade him to carry out their scheme, and even if they set them free he still could not take them home. The Doctor toys with the idea of taking everyone back to his own planet. He tells Victoria that he lives a long way from Earth.

15
The Doctor asks Maxtible about the control device the Daleks attached to Arthur Terrall. Maxtible is still engrossed in his calculations, and testily replies that the device was erratic.

16
Jamie interjects, claiming that it was lucky for Maxtible that the device failed – the Daleks would probably have used it on him next.

17
In a laboratory elsewhere in the city, a Black Dalek tells the other Daleks to discontinue work. They ignore it, and one of them questions the order. The furious Black Dalek demands to know who dared to question the command.

18
Another Black Dalek visits Maxtible in his cell and tells him the secret of transmutated metal will finally be his. Maxtible can barely contain his enthusiasm.

19
The Black Dalek indicates a machine containing various liquids in glass containers. It tells him to read out the atomic weight and specific gravity readings from an instrument on the side of the machine.

20
Maxtible eagerly writes the numbers down as he reads them out. Moments later, realisation dawns – the figures unlock the mystery and he proclaims that iron can indeed be turned into gold.

21
Maxtible turns to the others, laughing triumphantly. The Black Dalek tells Maxtible that the machine is his.

22
The Doctor warns Maxtible to stay away from the machine but Maxtible ignores him. As Maxtible steps inside the machine it emits a pulsing electronic noise and Maxtible's manic laughter abruptly ceases.

23
The Black Dalek orders the zombie-like Maxtible to turn and move away. In an emotionless monotone he says that he will obey. Jamie observes that Maxtible appears to have been turned into a Dalek.

24
The Black Dalek confirms that Maxtible has been indoctrinated with the Dalek Factor. The horrified Doctor asks the Black Dalek if that is what they intend him to do to the people of Earth. The Black Dalek responds that they know the Doctor will obey. Maxtible follows the Black Dalek out of the cell, his arms outstretched in a grotesque imitation of a Dalek.

25
The Black Dalek from the laboratory tells the Emperor that a Dalek refused an order. The Emperor tells it that it must have been one of the test Daleks – it must be found immediately. Meanwhile, Maxtible lumbers around the city. He moves a surveillance camera so it points out of a doorway and then heads for the detention area.

26
Everyone inside the Doctor's cell is asleep. Maxtible tells the Doctor that he can hear his voice, even though he is asleep.

27
The Doctor opens his eyes as Maxtible attempts to hypnotise him. Maxtible tells the Doctor he has had his TARDIS placed outside the city and that he will take him to it.

28
He places a small monitor screen next to the Doctor. The screen shows an image of the TARDIS from the surveillance camera – proof that Maxtible has indeed had it moved to safety.

29
The Doctor gets to his feet and follows Maxtible to the Dalek-ising machine in the corner of the cell. The noise alerts Jamie, who tells the Doctor to stop. But it is too late – the Doctor steps through the machine's archway entrance.

30
The Doctor's body convulses for a moment before he calmly steps back out.

31
The Doctor orders Jamie to stay where he is, his voice resembling the same flat monotone as Maxtible's. Maxtible intones that he and the Doctor will work together on the Dalek Factor. The Doctor follows him from the cell and the door closes behind him. The entrance to the machine offers another way out of the cell, but Jamie and the other prisoners dare not walk through it.

32
In the nearby laboratory, Maxtible shows the Doctor the machine that is being used for the mass production of the Dalek Factor. He then shows the Doctor an adjacent machine containing a small capsule. He explains that this machine will transform the thought patterns in the capsule into steam which will be sprayed into the Earth's atmosphere.

33
The Doctor grates that he wishes to examine the machine. Maxtible tells him to go ahead and leaves the room. The Doctor surreptitiously opens the compartment containing the Dalek Factor capsule.

34
Checking that Maxtible is out of sight, he replaces it with an identical-looking capsule from his pocket. He then closes the compartment and gets to his feet. The Doctor heads back to the cell and makes an adjustment to a control panel on the wall.

35
The Doctor wakes Jamie and tells him to bring everyone out of the cell via the archway in the Dalek-ising machine. Jamie can't believe what he's hearing, but the Doctor tells him to trust him. At the other end of the detention area a door opens to reveal a Black Dalek.

36
Using his Dalek-style voice, the Doctor tells the Dalek to take him to the Emperor. In the control room, the 'Dalek-ised' Doctor tells the Emperor that another Dalek has questioned an order. Maxtible adds that they have searched for the rogue Dalek without success. The Doctor pretends to have an idea: he suggests that all Daleks should pass through the machine's archway. That way, he argues, the Dalek with the Human Factor will be restored by the Dalek Factor. The Emperor agrees.

37
Obeying without question, all the Daleks in the city head for the machine's archway door.

38
The Daleks stream through, soon emerging on the other side.

39
The Doctor re-enters the cell and urges Jamie and the others to join the Daleks streaming through the archway. He tells the confused Jamie that he has switched the Factors in the machine, so all the Daleks going through are being given the Human Factor. He explains that his own trip through the archway didn't affect him because he's not from Earth.

40
Jamie, Victoria and Kemel go through the archway but Waterfield holds back – he wants to help the Doctor and track down Maxtible, who he holds responsible for everything that has happened. He asks Jamie to take care of Victoria and heads out of the cell through the door, looking for the Doctor.

41
The Daleks that have passed through the archway begin to behave in a playful, child-like manner. A group of them refuse to obey an order from a furious Black Dalek. Alpha, one of the original human-ised Daleks, opens fire. There is an explosion and the Black Dalek's dome is blown away.

42
The Black Dalek emits a lingering, piercing scream.

43
The exposed mutant creature inside the casing writhes helplessly for a few seconds before dying.

44
Elsewhere in the city, another Black Dalek encounters resistance from human-ised Daleks that refuse to obey orders. There is a confrontation and the human-ised Daleks open fire.

45
The Black Dalek screams as the human-ised Daleks unleash their weapons.

46
With the noise of the skirmishes ringing in his ears, the Doctor asks the human-ised Daleks to follow him. They reach the entrance to the control room, but their path is blocked by a Black Dalek. Goaded on by the Doctor, Beta and Omega demand to ask the Emperor why they must obey without question. The Black Dalek tells them to keep back, and there is a brief exchange of fire. The Doctor tells the human-ised Daleks to defend themselves against the Black Daleks. He advises them to destroy the Emperor or be destroyed themselves.

47
The Emperor recalls the remaining Black Daleks to the control room and orders them to exterminate the rebels. In the corridor outside, Waterfield catches up with the Doctor and tells him they must go. The Doctor agrees – his work is now done. As they turn to leave, Waterfield sees a Black Dalek approaching from the other end of the corridor. He pushes the Doctor out of the way, catching the full force of the blast.

48
The mortally wounded Waterfield falls to the ground.

49
As human-ised Daleks file past, the Doctor thanks Waterfield for saving his life. Waterfield feebly responds that it was a good life to save. The Doctor promises to look after Victoria, before Waterfield's eyes close for the last time. The Doctor gets to his feet and tells the human-ised Daleks that the Emperor has ordered their destruction. He tells Beta and Omega that their friends are fighting on their behalf in the control room. The human-ised Daleks head for the control room to join the other rebels.

50
In the control room the Emperor panics, pleading with the other Daleks to cease fighting. They ignore him, as the carnage spreads across the city.

51
The Emperor repeatedly orders the Daleks to stop fighting, but even his booming voice is drowned out by the sound of the battle. The control room is littered with damaged Daleks, the mutants inside their casings helplessly exposed.

52
The Emperor is no longer visible through the smoke as he threatens to exterminate and annihilate the fighting Daleks. As the battle rages, the Emperor warns that if the fighting continues the Dalek race will die out completely.

53
From the tunnel leading out of the city, Jamie, Victoria and Kemel look down at the smoke billowing from the chasm.

54
Suddenly, the Maxtible shouts Kemel's name. His voice echoes through the tunnel. Victoria grips Jamie as Kemel steps forward to confront his former master.

55
Maxtible repeats the word 'kill' over and over again, his eyes staring wildly ahead. He grips Kemel with inhuman strength and forces him towards the chasm. The Dalek voice in Maxtible's mind joins in the macabre chorus of the word 'kill' as he pushes Kemel over the edge. Kemel screams as he falls to his death.

56
In the control room the rebel Daleks have almost overcome the opposition. The besieged Emperor issues a desperate communication, ordering all Daleks to return to control immediately. From the entrance of the room, the Doctor watches the Emperor begin to disintegrate as he is subjected to repeated blasts from rebel Daleks.

57
As the city begins to collapse around him, the Doctor runs back towards the tunnel. He hides when he sees the deranged Maxtible heading in the opposite direction. As Maxtible re-enters the city he proclaims that the Daleks must not – cannot – be destroyed. The Dalek race must live, and rule, forever.

58
Devastating explosions rip through the Dalek city as, one by one, the buildings are blown apart. The ground shakes beneath the Doctor's feet as he runs along the tunnel towards the surface.

59
The Doctor is relieved to find Jamie and Victoria on a mountainside near the TARDIS. Jamie explains what happened to Kemel, and Victoria asks where her father is. The Doctor gently explains that he is dead, but adds that his death was not in vain. The Doctor adds that he thinks they have seen the end of the Daleks forever.

60
Victoria turns her face away and starts to sob. The Doctor reassures Jamie that they won't be leaving her behind. As Jamie tells Victoria that she'll be coming with them, the Doctor looks down at the ruins of the Dalek city. As he reflects on the fact that his fight against the Daleks is finally over, he tells himself that this is the end – the final end.

61
The smoke clears to reveal the shattered remnants of the control room. A stricken Dalek lies amongst the debris, a light faintly pulsing from its damaged casing. As the sounds of the battle finally recede, darkness descends on Skaro.
