05
"I was under the impression you were in the Central European Zone, Leader," says Bruce, surprised to see the man he believes to be Salamander in Kent’s office. Kent and Astrid share an anxious glance.

06
"I do not care to be questioned by my own security!" says the Doctor, maintaining the pretence that he is Salamander.

07
Bruce turns to Astrid, and resumes questioning her about the dead man found in her bungalow. "He was trying to protect me," she lies. "The other two wanted to kill me."

08
"Obviously they thought I was there," Kent tells Bruce. "Just like you, a lot of people don’t like me."

09
The Doctor has had enough, and angrily dismisses the confused Bruce. The security chief leaves the room, taking his guard with him. On his way out he warns Jamie to watch his step.

10
"I don’t know where you stand Mr Kent," says the Doctor, reverting to his usual voice, "but you and this Salamander are obviously on opposite sides. That at least is clear. But which side is good? Which side is bad? And why should I interfere?"

11
"You’re the only man who can help save the world," pleads Astrid. Victoria remains sceptical: "Isn’t that what Salamander’s trying to do?"

12
The Doctor turns to the unusually quiet Jamie for advice. "We couldn’t turn our back on a challenge like this Doctor," says the Scotsman. "Well, at least I know you wouldn’t. Astrid saved our lives. She was wounded because of it."

13
The Doctor begins to consider a plan, and points out that the Central European Zone is a long way from Australia. "It’s only two hours by rocket," says Astrid.

14
Astrid explains that she has had a plan for infiltrating Salamander’s inner circle for some time – she could adapt it to include Jamie and Victoria. Astrid and Kent can call on Denes, the zone’s sympathetic controller, to arrange travel warrants and visas.

15
Kent begins to tell the Doctor about Salamander’s research station at Kanowa.

16
Inside the research station, Bruce questions Benik about their Leader’s movements. Benik confirms that Salamander has departed for the Central European Zone.

17
Bruce tells Benik that he has driven from an encounter with Salamander, not 200 miles away. He adds that Salamander was with Giles Kent. "But he hates Kent," says Benik, suddenly taking the matter more seriously.

18
Bruce tells Benik to make radio contact with Salamander. "Make sure Kent hasn’t got some hold over him that we don’t know about." Benik is reluctant to comply: "He instructed me not to bother him until the conference was over."

19
"That’ll have to do," says Bruce. "Let me have a report as soon as you’ve spoken to him."

20
In the Central European Zone, Salamander points to the location of some extinct volcanoes. "A volcano is a strange thing," he tells Denes. "It’s like a man in the hot sun, sleeping... still... lifeless… Then boom! He wakes full of energy! I know volcanoes."

21
"Isn’t there a possibility of a miscalculation for a few degrees?" asks Denes. "I’m never wrong," says Salamander. "Every one of my predictions has been accurate."

22
"Yes," says Denes. "Your record is good. I don’t deny that."

23
Fariah enters the room to tell Salamander he has an incoming communication. "I told you I was not to be disturbed!" he barks.

24
Denes tells Salamander he will consult his scientific advisors about the volcanoes before causing his people any unnecessary alarm. "Your scientists won’t help you," says Salamander. "They don’t know. They are amateurs."

25
"No, Salamander, they are not amateurs," says Denes. "They are very clever men dedicated to their work. But they are men, capable of human error like anybody else." Denes leaves, but his second-in-command Fedorin stays behind.

26
"Have a drink," Salamander tells Fedorin. "We have a great deal to talk about, you and I."

27
Following a disorienting rocket journey, Jamie, Victoria and Astrid arrive in the Central European Zone.

28
"It’s all arranged," says Astrid. "Salamander is in residence in the President’s Palace." She gives Jamie a card to get through the front gate and tells him to find the terrace facing west. She then tries to raise the Australasian Zone on her radio transmitter.

29
"Don’t talk to me about sun spots," she tells the voice at the other end. "Please don’t worry about procedure, this is urgent. Connect me!"

30
Astrid is finally connected to Kent, although the sun spot activity causes interference with her transmission. "The rocket arrived right on time in Hungary," she says. "And Jamie’s got his entrance pass and has started phase one."

31
She tells Kent that she has arranged to meet Denes under a disused jetty by the river. "Disused Yeti?" mishears an alarmed Doctor. "Jetty, jetty!" says Kent.

Disused Yeti?

32
In the President’s Palace Fedorin pours himself a drink as he awaits Salamander.

33
Fariah enters the room. "Why don’t you sit down?" asks Fedorin. "I have never sat here," she replies.

34
"If you don’t like him why do you work for him?" he asks her. "He has a way of persuading people," she replies, muttering the word "brujo" under her breath.

35
"You’re obviously not an ordinary servant," observes Fedorin. "I am Salamander’s food taster," says Fariah. "There have been many attempts to poison him."

36
Fariah smiles as Fedorin realises that his drink has not yet been tested. "What on earth made you take a job as a food taster?" he asks.

37
"She was hungry," says Salamander, appearing at the door. "Only thing is, now she has all the food she needs, she has lost her appetite."

38
They are interrupted by Jamie, who jumps over a wall. Fedorin calls for a guard, but Jamie knocks him out and grabs his gun.

39
"Thank you for calling the guard," he tells Fedorin. "I was wondering what to do about him." Jamie warns Salamander not to signal for help, and then tells them all to duck.

40
Jamie takes Salamander’s radio telephone and throws it over the terrace. At the same time, Astrid activates a detonation switch. There is an explosion that alerts more guards, who run to Salamander’s aid.

41
Jamie calmly places his gun on the table as Salamander admonishes the guards. "Why do you risk your skin to save me?" asks Salamander, assuming his radio telephone was booby-trapped. "Well, without you the Earth hasn’t much of a chance, has it?" says Jamie.

42
Salamander is impressed. He offers Jamie and his ‘girlfriend’ jobs, and tells Fariah to find Jamie a uniform.

43
"What an extraordinary young man," says Fedorin, as Fariah leads Jamie away. "I prize loyalty very highly, my friend," says Salamander. "And I repay it very generously."

44
In the park, Astrid waits for Jamie to return.

45
"Can I ask you something?" says Fedorin. "What does ‘brujo’ mean?"

46
"It’s a word we use in Mexico – for ‘sorcerer’. Why?"

47
"Nothing..." says Fedorin...

48
...who casts his eyes down to a photograph of one of the supposedly extinct volcanoes.

49
"Here comes Jamie," says Astrid, looking up from her book.

50
Jamie and Astrid congratulate each other on a job well done, before Jamie spots Fariah and the Guard Captain approaching. Astrid makes a hasty exit.

51
The Guard Captain asks Jamie who the other girl was. "Why don’t you leave them alone?" says Fariah. "Do you have to treat everyone as if they’re criminals?" The Guard Captain leaves, and Fariah introduces herself to Victoria.

52
Astrid meets Denes beneath the jetty. "Have you been successful?" asks Denes. "So far," replies Astrid.

53
"This was the first time I met Salamander," says Denes. "I must say that you were right about him, Astrid. We must get rid of him. He must be stopped."

54
"Fedorin…" asks Astrid. "Can you trust him?" Before Denes can answer, heavy footsteps echo above their heads.

55
"I’ve been followed," says Astrid, as Denes gazes upwards. "I thought I’d thrown them off."

56
Astrid reaches for her gun but Denes restrains her. "No! There is enough violence as it is. Besides, Salamander mustn’t get suspicious. You kill his men and he will begin to think."

57
On the terrace, Salamander accuses Fedorin of fraud. Salamander predicts that there will be a disaster in the Central European Zone – and that he will then come to its aid. He says that Denes will be assassinated – and then offers Fedorin joint control of the zone. Fedorin withdraws in horror, as Salamander looks at his watch. "My predictions are accurate!" he proclaims. "The entire Eperjes-Tokaj Ranges are in eruption!"

58
"Fedorin, come and look," says Salamander triumphantly. "It’s very pretty. The history of Hungary is about to be rewritten!" Bruce enters the room, closely followed by Denes.

59
"You’ve done this somehow yourself!" Denes accuses Salamander, who responds furiously. "I warned this man that this zone was in danger of natural disaster and he did nothing! You deliberately allowed your people to suffer and die! You’re a traitor!"

60
As the sound of erupting volcanoes rumbles in the distance, Salamander orders Bruce to arrest Denes. As Bruce looks confused, Salamander tells Denes that the chief witness against him at his trial will be Fedorin...

NEXT WEEK: The Doctor tries to uncover the truth about Salamander.
