04
Salamander's guards arrive to escort the hapless Denes. Salamander makes Bruce personally responsible for the prisoner. "Why?" asks Bruce. "Don't you trust your own security?"

05
Salamander leaves to make a report to the World Authority, taking Fedorin with him. Bruce tells Denes he will do what he can for him. "Don't worry," says Denes. "I'm looking forward to facing Salamander in a public court. I won't run away."

06
Salamander flicks through a dossier that implicates Fedorin in fraud. The innocent Fedorin accuses him of blackmail. Salamander reminds him that it is actually a form of "comprehensive insurance".

07
Salamander puts the dossier in a safe behind him and hands Fedorin a small box of poison. "Used in the right way, at the right time, it can dictate your own future, and the future of Alexander Denes."

08
Bruce asks Jamie why he is dressed as a guard. Jamie replies that he is following Leader's orders.

09
"I want to know what Salamander and Giles Kent were discussing when I saw you last," says Bruce, but Jamie refuses to tell him.

10
Bruce tells the Guard Captain that although Denes is now a prisoner he is to be given whatever he wants. Denes asks for something to eat and drink. "Prison rations, Captain?" asks a guard.

11
"Certainly not," says the Captain. "Nothing but the best for Controller Denes. From our Leader's own kitchens." Denes also asks for a book to help pass the time, and suggests foreign travels as a subject.

12
Fariah takes Victoria to the kitchen, where she is to begin work as the assistant to Salamander's chef, Grif.

13
Victoria tries to convince Grif that she knows how to cook, but the chef sees through her and asks for a recipe.

14
Victoria tries to explain the recipe for the Kaiser Pudding she used to enjoy at home, but the chef isn't interested. He puts her to work peeling potatoes.

15
"Is that the best you can do for her?" says Fariah. "The girl must learn." Grif has a change of heart and tells Victoria to write out the menus. He starts dictating…

16
"First course interrupted by bomb explosion. Second course affected by earthquakes. Third course ruined by interference in the kitchen. I'm goin' out for a walk. It'll probably rain."

17
With Grif gone, Fariah advises the depressed Victoria not to get caught up in Salamander's world. She is about to tell Victoria something when Jamie appears. Fariah leaves and Jamie tells Victoria that Astrid is trying to get Denes away.

18
Jamie pauses while two guards walk past. When they have gone, Jamie tells Victoria that Salamander has had Denes arrested and that he's got Fedorin eating out of his hand.

19
"Remove the honest man and put a weaker man in his place," explains Jamie. "But somehow have a hold on him. That way Salamander can take over the territory." Victoria adds that the earthquakes have added extra turmoil.

20
"Aye, and that's lucky to say the least," says Jamie. Victoria looks up at him. "You don't really believe that Salamander could cause earthquakes, do you?"

21
Inside his trailer, Kent shows the Doctor television pictures of the continuing devastation. "Years ago, Doctor, when one country wanted to invade another it set about attacking the confidence of that country, throwing it into confusion, making it weak. Then it was ripe for takeover. Now isn't that exactly what's happening here only in a different way?

22
Kent listens as the Doctor wrestles with the idea that Salamander has harnessed the natural forces of the Earth. "It's a little difficult to accept. I'm not saying it's impossible, mind you. You said it's coming from the research station, Salamander's research station, eh?"

23
The Doctor grabs a pair of binoculars and stares at the research station in the distance before Kent gets nervous and asks him to step away.

24
Kent explains that Salamander invented the Sun Store, a device that directed conserved energy to areas starved of sun. He then tells the Doctor how he became suspicious: "The money he was spending at the research station, the materials involved, the food stores, it didn't make sense."

25
An approaching siren alerts Kent, who opens the lid of a nearby chest and bundles the Doctor inside. "I hope there's plenty of air in here!" protests the Doctor.

26
The door of the trailer flies open and Benik steps in, accusing Kent of being on research station territory. "What are you doing here?" he asks Kent, examining the binoculars. "Birdwatching, no doubt?"

27
Benik takes a framed picture off the wall. "Well, well, well. A memento of the old days," he sneers, before smashing the picture.

28
Benik calls a guard into the trailer. "Now then, you won't be staying in this vicinity, will you?" he tells Kent, but Kent says he won't be forced to leave.

29
The guard empties out the kitchen cupboard and smashes the crockery with the butt of his rifle.

30
"I wouldn't complain to anyone about this if I were you," says Benik as he makes to leave. "After all, nobody would believe you, would they?"

31
The Doctor emerges from his hiding place and examines the broken crockery. "Sad really, isn't it? People spend all their time making nice things, and other people come along and break them." He tells Kent that he still requires facts about Salamander – and he hopes that Jamie will bring them back.

Breaking things

32
Astrid explores the corridors outside Salamander's office.

33
"Halt!" calls out the young guard. "I have an urgent message for Leader Salamander," says Astrid, showing him her pass.

34
Astrid is about to move on when the guard introduces himself. "My name is Yannos. We drink wine together tonight?" Astrid responds by saying that she has to deliver her message.

35
"Yes, but later you will come back?" asks Yannos hopefully. "Oh yes," says Astrid knowingly. "Yes, I will come back."

36
As Astrid approaches the captive Denes she is confronted by the Guard Captain. She insists that she must deliver her message personally, and shows him the note as evidence of her intentions.

37
The Guard Captain says, "I know you from somewhere…" but before he can continue Denes drops his book. Yannos stoops to retrieve it, and Astrid continues on her way. The Guard Captain peers down the corridor after her.

38
In the kitchen Jamie is tucking into a meal. He looks up as Astrid enters the room.

39
Astrid asks Jamie and Victoria to create a diversion at 11 o'clock, at which point she will try to rescue Denes. She hears footsteps and disappears.

40
Grif returns, expresses surprise at Jamie's presence, and carries on with the cooking. Fariah appeas moments later and tastes the food. "This is good. That Grif's a genius."

41
She sees Jamie sitting at the table. "To you, Salamander is a god, isn't he?" she says. "The saviour of the world, that's why you work for him. You saved his life, didn't you?" Victoria asks Fariah why she works for Salamander. "Sometimes we do what we have to do, not what we want to do," she replies.

42
Victoria wheels a trolley containing a meal for Denes.

43
She bumps into Fedorin, who hides the salt shaker in the palm of his hand and pretends that Victoria has forgotten it. He sends her back to the kitchen to fetch it.

44
While she is gone, he opens the box of poison and takes a pinch of the deadly powder.

45
The Guard Captain tells Salamander he has remembered where he first saw Astrid – in the park, talking to Jamie and Victoria. "I want to know where she comes from," says Salamander. "Let her escape but have her followed. Frighten her away." He adds that he will deal with Jamie and Victoria.

46
The Guard Captain removes the knives from the cutlery before Denes can begin his meal, and is then obliged to cut the steak for his distinguished prisoner. Victoria sits down next to Denes as he begins his meal. The time is six minutes to eleven…

47
Fedorin tells Salamander that he couldn't bring himself to poison Denes. Salamander initially seems angry, but then asks Fedorin to share a drink with him.

48
Salamander turns his back on Fedorin, and adds two pinches of poison to his glass.

49
"Your health," says Salamander, as Fedorin takes his first sip. "I hope you'll appreciate this wine; it's made for me especially in Alaska."

50
Fedorin suddenly clutches his throat and falls to the ground, choking.

51
"One chance, my friend, I said one chance," says Salamander, gazing down at Fedorin's lifeless body. The Guard Captain arrives to tell Salamander about an incident in the kitchen. As Salamander leaves he describes Fedorin's death as suicide. "Such a pity."

52
Jamie claims to have spotted someone in the gardens outside the kitchen. He tells Grif to take cover, and to send the rest of the guards out after him. There is the sound of gunfire. "I know the food's bad, but you don't have to go that far!" says Grif.

53
Astrid karate chops Yannos and hurries Denes away. The Guard Captain fires a shot and Denes clutches his back. Victoria pushes the food trolley in the path of the oncoming guards, but they soon take her prisoner. She and Jamie are dragged before Salamander.

54
"I come to the Central Zone, an attempt is made on my life. Denes proves to be a traitor, Fedorin commits suicide because I uncover him. Do your job, Bruce – you can see they are all in on this." The guards take Jamie and Victoria away.

55
Bruce asks Salamander what's going on, and recalls the time he saw him with Kent, Astrid, Jamie and Victoria. Salamander insists he hasn't seen Kent for months, and decides to get back to the research centre.

56
"It was you!" says Bruce. "Or... someone like you..."

NEXT WEEK: The Doctor agrees to expose Salamander.
