 | | | A new cycle route - all the way from the Weston Bay, in North Somerset, to Lyme Bay and on to Seaton in East Devon - is being created in time for a grand opening in 2005.
Once complete, cyclists will be able to ride from the Bristol Channel to the English Channel.
The route - called the Wessex Way - is 120km long, with some 25km being in Devon. It is an integral part of the Sustrans National Cycle Network and should be complete by the summer of 2005.
Devon County Council is also backing the Wessex Way scheme, which will eventually form part of the proposed south and east Devon national cycle route from Plymouth to Axminster.

It will be a key section along the Dover to Penzance National Cycle Network Route 2.
The Wessex Way route is designed to encourage people to take up cycling, and will be mainly off road, or on lightly-trafficked roads.
Major roads and junctions will be avoided, and the route aims to go through the centre of each town and settlement along the way.
Other attractive features of the route are: - very few steep gradients
- stunning scenery
- historical points of interest
- easy cycling distance between each rural town
Devon county councillor for Seaton Rural, Margaret Rogers, described it as "an incredibly exciting project".
She said: "As an off-road route, the Wessex Way will be as attractive as possible, and become a flagship for this form of sustainable transport in England.
"I hope that local people will support the development of the route."
