Who's who? Luke Mitchell is our excellent vocalist with an extremely powerful voice which we reckon cuts through the mix with clear definition.
Jamie Hartnoll is our innovative lead guitarist with a playing securely rooted in soulful blues with a modern, hard rock edge.
Andrew Willmer is the melody man with a brilliant ear for originality. He grew up next to Luke and the pair have been playing and singing together forever. Andrew was previously our guitarist but is now in charde of keyboards and composition of melody!
Olly Mitchell is Luke's brother and one of the most original and natural bass players around.
And finally - last but not least - is Jon Bibby, our drummer. Bibby has played the drums since he was a child but he'd taken a break for a while when he met the others and now he's picked up the sticks again and provides the rhythmic power behind the Instinct sound.
And what about the track - The Sound of Life? It's the fourth track on our current album "Live Life". An original rock sound with a typically Instinct funky feel.
Lyrically the song sounds rather arrogant, but it's actually a reflection on the power of music.
In this case the "I" and "Me" in the lyric actually refers to the song itself.
It was difficult to choose which song to demo on the BBC website but this one seems to be a favourite. Buy the album or check out our website if you want to hear others! What's your most memorable gig? Recently probably the Buccanneer in Westward Ho! Very low key but the PA blew up and we ended up finishing the set as an unplugged session 'specially for some girls birthday! She loved it - but it was rather "make-it-up-as-we-go-along"!! What are the highs and lows of living and gigging in Devon? | | Shattering the peace and quiet - Bibby on the drums |
Highs: Peace and quiet (until Bibby starts drumming!) and beautiful women on the beach! The best thing is the peace and quiet, the countryside and the beaches generally outweigh all the frustrations.
And the lows? Sometimes it can be TOO quiet - mainly in the music world.
It's so hard to make an impact on the industry when you come from this area - because everything is so spread out there is a lot of competition for the very few good venues to play.
And - everyone knows everyone else!
How does that make you feel about the current music scene? The current music scene is changing. It seems bands are coming back and people are looking for more organic music, more natural soul from songs.
This is possibly an exciting time. Bands such as Coldplay and Travis have brought organic music back on the scene with others like the Darkness bringing back the fun in rock 'n' roll.
The local music scene in Devon seems a bit behind the times and people a little stuck in their ways. As a band we find it hard to capture the attention of local people despite their enthusiasm of the music they hear on CD.
That said, there's a lot of exciting movement in the local scene, but it's rather hidden away and sometimes hard to spot.
And if you ARE spotted? If we become famous? Well there's no end to what we want to do!
Both for personal and selfless reasons we each have so many things that we want to achieve! |
