Hand and mouth hygiene are important

Swine flu precautions

As Devon sees its first case of swine flu at Paignton Community College, here's what to look out for if you are worried or concerned.

The message from local health agencies is that mouth and hand hygiene is one of the best ways to help reduce the chance of transmitting the virus.

If you sneeze or cough, cover your mouth using a tissue whenever possible.

Washing your hands with soapy water regularly is another tip to stop the virus spreading from your hands to your face.

Any hard surfaces, like door handles, which are frequently used should also be cleaned with a cleaning product.

Symptoms and advice

  • Swine flu symptoms are similar to ordinary seasonal flu - fever, cough, sore throat, body aches, chills and fatigue
  • Anyone with symptoms who has recently visited an affected area should seek medical advice
  • If you suspect infection, stay at home and take advice by phone

For the next seven days Paignton Community College will be closed as a precaution after one female pupil contracted the H1N1 strain of swine flu.

The 12 year old youngster was on the same flight from Mexico as the Scottish couple who were the first to be diagnosed in the UK.

Torbay residents are being reassured by the Health Secretary, Alan Johnson that everything is being done to stop the spread of the illness.

About 230 pupils from year seven are being given anti-viral drugs.

Pupils and parents will also receive advice from the Health Protection Agency, while Torbay NHS Care Trust has said its keen to reassure the local community.

Public health consultant Dr Sarah Harrison said: "Only those who have had close contact and are in contact with the student need to be offered anti-viral drugs."

"It's important to remember the student is responding well to treatment and we would urge people not to be unduly concerned at this stage."
