In 1957, the Mayflower II famously recreated the Pilgrims voyage to America.
In September 1620, the Pilgrim Fathers set sail from Plymouth on board the Mayflower. A replica of that famous ship is now berthed at Plymouth, Massachusetts, close to where the New World settlers first landed. The Mayflower II was built by skilled shipwrights at Uphams Yard in Brixham during 1956/57. To mark the 50th anniversary of the replica being sailed across the Atlantic, BBC South West has delved into the archives to rescue a documentary film made at the time. The programme, 'Mayflower Sails Again', features commentary and poetry written by the poet Charles Causley. This page features two short black & white extracts from the programme. last updated: 20/02/2008 at 11:57 SEE ALSOYou are in: Devon > History > Archive Films > Building the Mayflower II |
