Wildlife experts and local BBC presenters will be met the public in Plymouth city centre's Piazza on 9 June at the 2007 Springwatch Festival of Nature. The BBC has teamed up with the Devon Wildlife Trust to bring a breath of fresh air to Plymouth with loads of things to get you in tune with wildlife. You can learn how to make a nest box, make a hedgehog feel at home, and meet up with people who have all the advice necessary to bring the wild back to your life. Birds, animals and insects know no boundaries and are as abundant in urban areas as in many parts of the countryside. | | A frog in a garden pond |
The aim of the festival is to make you a 'doer' for wildlife rather than just an observer. When you come to the festival you will be asked to sign-up to 'Do One Thing'. It could be to plant a tree, nurture the nettles or give a bird a home. By signing up you will be kept up-to-date with things you can do throughout the year through a Breathing Places newsletter. From birds to bugs, ponds to ponies, from making fatballs to constructing bird boxes, there will be plenty of practical guidance and advice to get you started. So sign up to 'do one thing' - an invitation to do YOUR bit for wildlife in your neck of the woods. Many of the principle wildlife organisations will be there to help and guide you including the RSPB, Environment Agency, Pennywell Farm, Energy Saving Trust and Natural England. | | One of the BBC nest boxes |
The greater the number of people who do something, the bigger the benefit to wildlife. Making sure there is food for caterpillars will prove beneficial for birds; putting up a nest box may help more eggs to hatch as they're out of reach of domestic and other animals; leaving wood to rot will help slugs and snails thrive and provide food for hedgehogs. Whatever your age, there will be something at the Springwatch Festival to entertain you. There's a CBeebies special dance to keep the little ones on the move or you can meet an eagle with a nine foot wingspan. You may also find some really wild characters that are larger than life with Mr Squirrel, Mrs Badger and Mr Rat. So come along to Plymouth's Piazza on 9 June, enjoy the music, the dancing, the demonstrations and then get involved by taking action to help improve the wildlife in your surroundings. Make yourself a promise to get involved. In fact, sign-up to and join hundreds of other people across Devon making a difference. |
