Radio programmes come and go, presenters change and musical fashions dictate the schedules, but one BBC Radio Devon presenter has weathered all the storms and will present the 1000th edition of his specialist brass band music programme on Sunday 26th February 2006. Phillip Hunt first introduced 'Sounds of Brass' to the airwaves on 5th September 1985 and hasn't looked back since. | "To have it (the theme tune) recorded by the most famous brass band in the world is the icing on the cake" | | Phillip Hunt - Sounds of Brass |
Over the ensuing years the programme has been broadcast to more and more stations. It can now be heard on nine BBC Local Radio Stations across the west of England and the Channel Islands, as well as being available worldwide on the internet. In 2004, the Cornish composer Kevin Ackford, wrote and dedicated a theme tune for the programme. Great Accolade Now, to mark the 1000th programme, Dr Nicholas Childs and The Black Dyke Band have offered to make a special recording of the theme and to include it on their forthcoming CD. It's a gesture that has delighted Phillip. "To have a theme tune written especially for the programme was a great honour and now to have it recorded by the most famous brass band in the world is the icing on the cake. | | Looking forward to the 1000th programme |
"I cannot thank Kevin, Nicholas and The Black Dyke Band enough for according me this accolade." The 1000th programme will consist of a selection of the many listeners' requests which have been sent in for this special edition. Over the coming weeks Phillip will be delving into the archives to re-broadcast some of the interviews he has made since 1985. And if all that's not reason enough to be blowing his own trumpet - what is?
