The reign of Argyle manager Bobby Williamson is over, after just 16 months and 55 games in charge, writes BBC Radio Devon's Sport Editor Richard Green. The Scot has ultimately paid the price for poor results this season, but the club flirted with relegation towards the end of the last, and only narrowly escaped. This summer, the former Hibs boss was backed with transfer money and big name buys such as Taribo West, Rufus Brevett and just last week, Matt Derbyshire, but a run of four successive defeats has left the Pilgrims just a place off the early season Championship relegation zone. The club have been very public, in their wish to push on this season - and that has simply not happened. Indeed, the recent results and poor performances have seen fans calling for the removal of Williamson and perhaps more significantly attendances falling. Williamson's record saw him hit the heights early on in April 2004 when he guided the team, left behind by Paul Sturrock and Kevin Summerfield, into the Championship His first full season in charge saw the Pilgrims finish 17th, just three points off relegation. Negativity This season started brightly, with a win at Reading, but the club have failed to win a single match at home and have lost the last four on the trot, most latterly at Brighton. Even at that stage, Wiliamson was aware of the grumbling but still sounded confident in his own ability: "The longer it goes when you're losing games, there's a lot of doubters and a lot of negativity flies around," he said. "But you've just got to be positive and simply believe that what you're doing will certainly change and get right eventually but it's difficult when you're going through these periods." His overall record sees him take charge of 55 Argyle matches, winning just 18, drawing 12, and losing 25. Inevitably talk now turns to a successor. Jocky Scott is in charge of first team affairs for now, but there appears to be recognised managers already in the frame for the Home Park hot seat. Former Aston Villa and Derby boss John Gregory, former Sunderland and Manchester City manager Peter Reid, and ex-England central defender Terry Butcher are already being linked to the vacancy. At present, the club is refusing to make any further comment. |
