Fresh: New Faces 2003

Getting a mouthful of vodka
tinyIf you've suddenly started spotting lots of unfamiliar faces around town, it could be something to do with the start of another year at the University of Derby.

We took our cameras to the Freshers' Ball.

Spirits were high at the University of Derby's Student Union on Friday as a fresh intake of students let down their hair and went crazy for this year's Freshers' Ball.

The event marked the end of a hectic week for hundreds of fresh-faced undergraduates living away from home for the first time.

As you'd expect, those present entered into the spirit of things with plenty of drinking, snogging, dancing and general falling over - their parents would have been so proud!

The musical treats laid on by the Student Union included a disco featuring crowd-pleasing chart hits - The Darkness in particular got a huge reaction - and then local covers band Submarine took to the stage to give us their renditions of Oasis's Supersonic and James's Laid.

But the headline act was the new boyband Triple 8. The four lads took to the stage to big cheers but disaster struck when the smoke alarms went off - forcing the building to be evacuated.

Four fire engines arrived at the event to check the situation - meanwhile hundreds of cold punters made their own entertainment in the car park courtesy of a conga line, a mobile disco (someone's Mini Metro) and plenty of horseplay.

Eventually the students were allowed back inside the building to round off the night with lots more fun and games - those who were still standing at least!

Fresher Justin Goulding had arrived on Monday and was clearly enjoying himself.

He said: "It's been brilliant. I had been a bit worried about whether I'd actually manage to make any friends but we've got this really great crowd and I've had an amazing week.

"I thought tonight started a bit slowly - I was wondering what I'd paid £12 for because it felt like a school disco - but as it filled up and people started letting their hair down, it's been mad."

A great night it may have been, but for these lucky young things, the party's only just begun. The Union has another week of Freshers' activities planned and after that the students are likely to keep going for another three years! Oh to be 18 again!
