A load of balls?
Diabolos
Colourful diabolos
tinyHockey with unicycles, parachute games, stunts with kites and you thought it was all a loads of balls!

We're off to the British Juggling Convention 2004.
tiny

According to research tossing three balls in the air is the knack to increasing the greatness of your grey matter.

Yes, researchers in Germany say that whilst it's still unclear how learning to juggle can increase the size of your brain it's a fact.

With this in mind you can expect one usually sleepy corner of Derbyshire to be crammed full of juggling geniuses from the 14th to the 18th April.

The 17th British Juggling Convention, a four day festival hosted by a different city each year, is being held at Broomfield Hall this year.

International Circus Stars

Hundreds of British and international jugglers, performers and circus skill experts are expected, each hoping to pick up a few tricks, share their expertise and catch up with like minded apparent clever clogs.

It's not just for the experts though, there're plenty of opportunities for none jugglers to get involved. Whether you want to take part in a workshop, be dazzled by the public show, marvel at the juggling olympics, or just soak in the festival atmosphere you're bound to find something to suit.

Yo-Yos
For fans of the Yo-Yo there's even the added attraction of the British Yo-Yo championships being held at Broomfield on Friday afternoon.

Workshops that appeal to us include: Unicycling, Diabolo and swinging weirdness with clubs.

Some of the more strange sounding sessions include whipcracking, nail in the nose and dancing with the devil stick.

Learn some party tricks
And you shouldn't miss the chance to learn a few party tricks either. Imagine your friends' delight when you suddenly reveal your high speed Rubics cube solving skills, your cool knack with a lasso and your clever skipping skills. Anyone who's tempted by belly dancing has the opportunity to learn too. Instructor Lisa Haynes insists it's a class for girls and guys!

Juggling Olympics

If you can't make it out to Broomfield don't worry, you don't have to miss out. The British Juggling Olympics are taking place in Derby Market Place on Saturday
17th from 1pm. Expect the visually stunning and whatever you do don't miss the Uni Hockey finals!

Public Show
The piece de resistance happens on Saturday night when the show goes indoors at the Assembly Rooms. Doors open at 7pm, tickets cost £10 and you're assured highly skilled juggling, danger and comedy
from the likes of Team Rootberry, the LaSalle Brothers and Fistful of Lice.

Your comments on this story

Greatings All, I am doing some research on the Human Body's Reflex Responses, and as part of that I would like to know if anyone in the Juggling WWWorld has ever met a Blind Juggler, or anyone who uses a blindfold while juggling. Does anyone know of anyone in the history or lore that was either blind-from-birth, blinded-after-birth, or used a blindfold during their act? I would prefer to talk to someone still living, but if there is a history web page out there, that would be helpful too. If you don't know of anyone off the top of your head, so to speak, please pass this request on to someone that may. Thanks. GB

i just want to tell people who may snigger at juggling not to. i used to wonder what people saw in it, but went to a juggling convention myself and found it to be the most enjoyable thing i have ever done. i started with rolled up socks but now i've progressed to juggling large objects like chickens. go on, give it a go yourself!!!!!!
liam marlow, derby

This was my first convention i've ever been to. I would like to thank everyone who made it very enjoyable, and will see you all at the next!
Kathryn - St Ives, Cornwall

The convention was beautifull and I guess the best was the real renegade... It was really good and the vibe around it was the best. Loved the show, was amazing just a shame no picture taking was allowed. Thank you all!!!
Faye - London

the "Best Bananas - Quality" thing has been going on since the late 90's and I think it's a reference to a phrase that a york based juggler overheard in a market. It was amusing for the first year or so.

The fountain in Derby market place is great fun. I enjoyed juggling around it and passing with people who were standing on top.

Why do people shout 'Best Bananas - Quality' it's happened for years and I don't know why?

Jay Gilligan is a lunatic. I thought it was a bit sad that people were heckling him at Renegade later on. Jesus, he's like the only one who can do that kind of thing so give the guy a break and let him do it. Glad some girlies got up and did their thing (not including the flooze who got her tits out - anyone can juggle with two sweetie). Well done guys, a fantastic festival atmosphere.
Abbi

Good show, good show. Loved it. Well done
Robin - Brighton

I've seen the Derby juggling Cabaret before and this is 10 times bigger and, promises to be a top class event. Unmissable!!!
