|  | Thousands of adoring fans turned out to see football hero, Brian Clough, given the freedom of the city of Derby.
On a beautiful spring morning, Clough was in good spirits as he was honoured by the city in which he had achieved his first real success in football management.

The event started with Mr Clough being picked up from his home and driven to the Baseball Ground in a vintage Rolls-Royce.

Rams chairman Lionel Pickering greeted Clough on his arrival at the old stadium as hundreds of onlookers gathered to watch the spectacle.
After a tour of the Baseball Ground and a chat with the local media, Clough was whisked off to Darley Park Tea Room where members of the Derby County supporters group, Ramstrust, handed him a Lifetime Achievement award.

Next stop was Exeter Street for the planting of a mature Oak - complete with plaque paying tribute to Mr Clough.
And from here, Mr Clough was driven to the current home of Derby County, Pride Park stadium, where thousands of Rams fans had gathered to watch his arrival.
Following a lunch with the mayor of Derby, Robin Turner, it was time for the official granting of the Freedom of Derby.

The leader of Derby city council, Chris Williamson, paid tribute to Clough in a short speech and then bestowed the honour to the great man.
Clough responded with a speech featuring his trademark caustic wit - showing that his recent medical problems had done little to diminish his humour and bluntness.

And the day ended with a few minutes on the Pride Park pitch - and there was even time for a quick kickaround with his grandson who had escorted Clough through the day.
