When the government introduced new licensing laws a year ago, many feared the extended opening hours would put massive pressure on this country's emergency services. ![]() An injured reveller There are 700 establishments in Derby with a licence to sell alcohol and 320 took advantage of the new laws. But police say the change in law has had a positive effect. There have been nearly 1,000 fewer assaults in Derby compared with the year before the new laws were introduced. But that doesn't mean Derby's emergency services can start taking weekends off.
