Its history can be traced back to the early 16th Century when a relatively small manor house was on the site. It wasn't opened as a public park until 1927. This is commemorated with a plaque located by the eastern lodge. Whilst the majority of the transformation of the manor gardens into a public park was undertaken in the 1920's and thirties, the park has continued to develop reflecting changing local community needs. It has formal gardens, woodlands, a playground, tennis courts, two bowling greens, crazy golf, putting, a miniature train, cafe, open play spaces, a lake and river and car parking, So there's plenty for everyone.
