Maurice Lea Park

Maurice Lea Memorial Park

Maurice Lea Memorial Park is located in the old mining village of Church Gresley, just outside Swadlincote.

Maurice Lea Park was completed in 1929 and opened in 1930. Its site was part of Gresley Common, which had become totally degraded by clay and coal extraction. It was paid for by Herbert Lea, a successful businessman and native of the area, in memory of his son Maurice who was killed in the first World War.

The park has recently benefited from a lottery grant which enabled the council to replace boundary railings that were taken away during World War II. Repairs were also carried out on the bandstand roof and a new water feature was installed.

More recently, the park has received funding from Barclays "Spaces for Sports" community sponsorship programme. Work has already begun on creating the new sports facilities which will include a multi-user games area.
