Past simple (irregular verbs)

Elvis Presley: I gave a letter to the postman / He put it in his sack / Bright and early next morning / He brought my letter back

She wrote upon it / Return to sender, address unknown / No such number, no such zone / We had a quarrel, a lover’s spat. / I write I’m sorry but my letter keeps coming back.

V Elvisově písni se nejčastěji objevuje minulý čas prostý, protože popisuje činnosti, které jsou ukončeny a které proběhly v určitém čase v minulosti.

Všechna slovesa, která tu použil byla navíc nepravidelná. U pravidelných sloves stačí přidat koncovku -ed: walk - walked - Yesterday I walked to work.

Ovšem řada běžných anglických sloves je nepravidelná: give - gave: I gave a letter to the postman. Put - put: He put it in his sack. Bring - brought: He brought my letter back.

Tato slovesa jsou sice nepravidelná v kladném tvaru, ovšem v záporu a v otázkách jsou pravidelná: I gave a letter to the postman - I didn’t give a letter to the postman - He put it in his sack - Did he put it in his sack?
