  21 / -ish

Kořeny: green, old, six
Koncovka: -ish
Výrazy: greenish, oldish, sixish

I bought a lovely new scarf last week: it is greenish blue with a flower pattern.

To many people, the word 'manager' means an oldish man, about fifty-five, wearing a suit and sitting at a large desk.

My baby wakes up at sixish every morning - it makes me very tired for the rest of the day.

Má nová šála je zelenkavo modrá s květovaným vzorem. Slovo "manažér" znamená: postarší muž, kolem padesáti pěti v obleku. Mimino se budí každé ráno kolem šesté.

Když ke slovu přidáme příponu -ish, znamená potom: určitou vlastnost, ne v plném ale v omezeném rozsahu. Další příklady:

If you are leaving my house, you first go along a straightish lane for a couple of kilometres until you get to a reddish-brown house where you turn left. There is never much traffic until five-ish in the afternoon.

(Ne úplně rovná ulička, červeno hnědý dům, kolem páté odpoledne)

Rada: koncovka -ish je velice plodná: The ending -ish is very productive: you can invent lots of new adjectives by putting at the end of familiar ones. Use it especially with colours and with times – greyish, ten-ish.
