Lead ore was discovered by a Dutch team in the 1650s and mining began half a century later.
Glenridding hit its peak as a mining community in 1825 and the surrounding area was changed significantly by the industry.
Tarns were dammed to facilitate waterwheels and there were two floods in the village when these dams broke.
One of the old mining buildings is now a Youth Hostel and the Greenside Lead Mines Company was closed in 1962, with the surrounding area being landscaped.
The village is now a key tourist destination and visitors can take cruise of Ullswater from the historic steamers which launch from the pier.
