Seals on Colonsay

What's your story about?

COLONSAY FEAST is about my first incredible journey to the Isle of Colonsay in the Inner Hebrides, in April 2001. It tells of one long day amongst stunning scenery. I met a pod of seals and got caught in a wild thunderstorm. A surprise feast rounded off an amazing day.

Why did you choose to tell this particular story?

I chose this story because I feel it has all the ingredients of a tale where fact is stranger than fiction. Where a traveller is welcomed with warm hospitality into a small, closely knit community. COLONSAY FEAST does not only mean food, it also refers to the spectacular scenery and wild nature of Colonsay. The Island has certainly weaved its magical spell and I have made several return journeys. I never found out the reason for the delicious feast.

What was the experience of making your digital story like?

I found the TELLING LIVES experience a real challenge, and at times frustrating even though I am reasonably computer literate. Working on the BBC BUS was very different from the quiet classroom at Ambleside Community Development Centre. The tutors were very helpful and I enjoyed the film making process. The timescale to complete the project was very limited with many new features to learn!!

Please tell us about yourself.

I am a keen amateur photographer with a lifetime of exploring wild places, bought up with a passion for natural history and wilderness. I enjoy wandering with cameras, rucksack and a huge sense of adventure. My work is impressionist, and I draw my inspiration from the wild scenery and natural environments I walk through in Cumbria and further afield.
