Nestled in the undulating countryside in West Cumbria between the A595 and the A596, a few miles from Aspatria, lies the parish of Plumbland. One of the fantastic things that can be said about Plumbland is the strong sense of community spirit. What comes across from the residents is the pride in where they live and how they all pull together. | | Plumbland Church |
Plumbland Parish consists of the four ancient manors – Parsonby, Wardhall (originally Warthole), Arkleby and Plumbland. Each manor originally had a manor-house – Plumbland Hall, Arkelby Hall, Warthole Hall, and the Rectory at Parsonby, although during the centuries, these buildings were generally abandoned for newer ones. The whole parish contains 169 dwellings, and the population around 390. Wardhall once had boundary walls, but they were pulled down a long time ago, although it can boast a mulberry bush and a few architectural remains such as a gate entrance and a stone ball. The village hall is well used by the community, with a variety of activities taking place on most days. The small primary school has been in situ for over 200 years. | | Houses in Plumbland |
Being a rural community, the parish is served by a grocery van, mobile butchers, a milk van, a mobile library, frozen food merchant, and even a mobile post office. With such an impressive selection of mobile services, the villagers have the opportunity to socialise around the vans throughout the week! |
