The Tapestry Room at Muncaster

Haunted Muncaster

Ghosts, ghouls and spooky goings-on with things that go bump in the night - Spend Halloween with us, via webcam and radio, as we spend a terrifying night at Muncaster Castle ...

Factfile

Ghost: This word is derived from the Saxon word gaste, meaning spirit.

Muncaster Castle is reputedly one of the most haunted buildings anywhere in the UK.

Paranormal researchers come to the Castle to seek rational explanations of the strange happenings, usually without success.

BBC Cumbria will be spending Halloween in what is said to be the most haunted part of Muncaster Castle, The Tapestry Room.
The Castle has occupied the commanding site over looking the River Esk since 1208.
The house has been linked to many strange goings on. Many of these are linked to a character Called Tom Fool, of Tom Foolery fame.

Other stories concern the 'Muncaster Boggle' or White Lady who haunts the gardens and roadways around Muncaster. She is supposedly the ghost of Mary Bragg, a young girl murdered in the early 1800s on the road near the Main Gate.

Most hauntings at the castle take place in The Tapestry Room where visitors complain of disturbed nights, hear footsteps outside the room, see the door handle turning, and the door opening although nobody is there.
A child is frequently heard crying towards the window end of the room, and sometimes a lady heard singing, comforting a sick child.
Visitors have also felt cold in the room for no apparent reason.

Halloween: Live online and on air

BBC Cumbria is linking up with our BBC Radio Cumbria colleagues for an evening from Muncaster.
During the Paul Braithwaite programme, live from 10.00pm to 1.00am, Paul O'Neil will be reporting live from the grounds and rooms of Muncaster Castle.
You will also be able to see for yourself images, via webcam, from within the thick castle walls.
