For those who still don't know, it's the one and only, Barrow born Emlyn Hughes ... ![]() Emlyn Hughes Emlyn started his football career playing for Blackpool in 1964 and then transferred to Liverpool where he became the Captain. He was also the Captain of the England squad - not quite as easy on the eye as Mr Beckham though, would you agree girls? After retiring from football, Emlyn turned to television and became quite a celebrity on 'Question of Sport' and 'Sporting Triangles'; and if that wasn't enough, he has also bagged himself an OBE in recognition for his services to football. Sadly Emlyn Hughes died in November 2004 after losing his battle against cancer. ![]() John Gorman in action Emlyn is arguably the most famous Cumbrian footballer, but there are other famous players who started their careers at our very own Carlisle United ... GormanWell known for being Glenn Hoddle's right-hand man, John Gorman played for Carlisle United for seven years before going on to play for Tottenham Hotspur.
