Emlyn Hughes

Is this man your CUFC Cult hero?

Footie heroes with Cumbrian Connections

Do you recognise this famous Cumbrian footballer? CLUE - he was a regular on TV programmes, 'Question of Sport' and 'Sporting Triangles'. For those who still don't know, it's the one and only, Barrow born Emlyn Hughes ...

Emlyn Hughes

Emlyn Hughes

Emlyn started his football career playing for Blackpool in 1964 and then transferred to Liverpool where he became the Captain. He was also the Captain of the England squad - not quite as easy on the eye as Mr Beckham though, would you agree girls?

After retiring from football, Emlyn turned to television and became quite a celebrity on 'Question of Sport' and 'Sporting Triangles'; and if that wasn't enough, he has also bagged himself an OBE in recognition for his services to football.

Sadly Emlyn Hughes died in November 2004 after losing his battle against cancer.

Emlyn is arguably the most famous Cumbrian footballer, but there are other famous players who started their careers at our very own Carlisle United ...

Gorman

Well known for being Glenn Hoddle's right-hand man, John Gorman played for Carlisle United for seven years before going on to play for Tottenham Hotspur. Since then he has been the Assistant Coach for England and the Assistant Manager for Spurs and Ipswich Town.

Peter Beardsley

Delap

More Recently, Rory Delap spent six years doing time at Carlisle United before transferring to Derby County and then to Southampton for £4m.

Beardsley

Old jutting jaw himself, Peter 'why aye man' Beardsley also played for Carlisle United for three years before transferring to Man. United, then to Newcastle United, Liverpool and lastly to Bolton Wanderers. Beardsley, obviously likes the North and who can blame him?

ATTENTION GIRLS!
Jansen

Saving the dishiest for last, England player Matt Jansen started his blooming career at Carlisle United, but only stayed for two years before being snapped up by Crystal Palace and was then sold to Blackburn Rovers for £4.1m - worth every penny, I'm sure, heehee.

Why are we telling you all this?

We want your suggestions for local football heroes - past and present. You can add to the list or tell us why our suggestions should be in a Cumbrian Hall of Fame ...
