Report by Faye, website producer

Our research started around Christmas when, inexplicably, hundreds of shops found their supplies of dance mats dangerously low. The arcade-style mats that plug into PlayStations or televisions were flying off the shelves at an unprecedented rate.

We investigated why this might be and can now reveal an underground movement of 20 and 30-somethings throwing hotly contested dance mat competitions.

Perfecting the moves at a secret party
Many people old enough to know better are buying the dance mats on the pretence they are for a young relative. Some even do have small children, but after their kids' bedtimes, the dance mat comes out again for the adults' entertainment.

Now in living rooms and lounges all over the area, 20 and 30-somethings are gathering for what can only be described as a new cult of dance.

Secret filming

The dance mat game caution message and alcohol, confirming the dangers involved
An undercover agent, posing as a break dancing specialist, went along to one of these mid-life parties. Her secret filming reveals the strength of the following this new craze has attracted.

Filmed at a secret location, the videos show the level of devotion to the cult of 'dance matting' and are a cautionary tale on the dangers of mixing alcohol and dance.

Dangerous competitions

One of the most shocking aspects of this new craze is the competitive use of the dance mat. Gambling on winners, undignified forfeits and drinking games have all been reported in connection with the mats' scoring system.

This combination of playground bravado and Mafia passion could have tragic consequences if it continues.

We will return any photographs and videos but cannot be held responsible for any loss or damage in the post.

We would also like to assess which of our secretly-filmed dancers has the most impact on the public. Please email us using the link on the top right to voice your reactions. Who is the worst dancer? Who is clearly influenced by Pan's People? Who has a future in music videos? Who should Moon Walk away from the craze?

Help our research and your nominations and reactions will be added to this report on the website.
