Who's got the G Factor?

Eight bands have won through to play at the Godiva Festival and one of them will get to play on the main stage.

The four G Factor Heats have now taken place with eight bands winning through to get a place at the Godiva festival. One of these bands will now be chosen to appear on the main stage at the event. Voting will begin here on Wednesday, 9 May and run for two weeks.

The eight bands who have been chosen to play at the Godiva Festival are:

  • Fiori
  • Hobo Exile Hotel
  • The Great Blind Degree
  • 7th Wave
  • Death By Miss Adventure
  • What About Cube?
  • Decatone
  • Trailer

Getting a slot on the main stage

One of the eight winning bands will get the chance to move up to a slot on the main stage on Saturday 15 July along with Mercury Rev and Forward Russia. The band will also make a promo video with us to be broadcast on BBC Coventry & Warwickshire TV. And our very own Liz Kershaw will personally hand a CD of music by the winning band to BBC Radio 1's Steve Lamacq.

Each of the top eight acts will be featured on our radio programmes and website. There will then be a public vote here on the BBC Coventry & Warwickshire website to determine the winner.

The public vote begins on Wednesday 9 May and runs for two weeks. You will be able to vote online and by text.

The heats

A good crowd turned out to the Jailhouse in Coventry over the bank holiday weekend. Fifteen bands competed with each other to win over the crowd and judges to make it through to the final stages of the G factor.

Coventry band Ottogono got things off to a great start. They were followed by Hobo Exile Hotel, Fiori, The Rrrs and Russian Girlfriend (who were cheered on by The Armstrongs). Fiori got the best crowd reaction delivering an excellent dose of glam rock on a Saturday afternoon and they went on to be the first band to get through to perform at the Godiva Festival. It was Hobo Exile Hotel that beat off the rest of the competition to take the second slot that was up for grabs. The best two bands definitely won.

Sunday was always going to be a tougher gig to play. Satsangi just about managed to wake everyone up before 7th Wave definitely got everyone over their Sunday morning hangovers. They were followed by The Circle, The Great Blind Degree and Circle 3. The clear winners of the day were The Great Blind Degree who absolutely stole the show. They looked and sounded fantastic. 7th Wave also did enough to impress and managed to take second position despite it being their first ever gig.

Monday's Bank Holiday heat saw Death By Miss Adventure and What About Cube? go through. It was another tough round, which also featured Akeal, The Buzzin Flies and Alex Nate. There's now one more heat left, taking place at the Golden Cross on Saturday, 6 May from 1pm.

Another bumper crowd turned up at the Golden Cross to see the fourth and final G Factor heat. Lament kicked things off and were followed by Jamson's Nook and The Shakes, with all three putting in great performances. But it was the last two bands who won the audience and judges vote and grabbed a spot on the Godiva bill. Decatone drew praise from judges and the crowd alike and Trailer finished the day with an explosive performance that left frontman Myke Grimes... quite literally... bleeding!

Well done to all eight bands.
