Band on the run

When two runners found out they had more in common than a pair of spikes, they formed a musical partnership and gave birth to our band of the month for October, The Polaris.

The Coventry four-piece are indie-rockers. Okay, so that’s a fairly bland, all-encompassing term but it really does sum up their sound.

The Polaris are influenced by the US band Flickerstick, The Who, Pink Floyd, Oasis and Feeder to name a few.

The vocalist sounds like a gravelly Robbie Williams at times but don't let that description put you off because their tunes certainly set them apart from Stoke's most famous export.

Since taking their name from the Northern Star around a year ago The Polaris are now enjoying gigging around the country although mostly in their home city. So much so they’ve already lined up five gigs in October before heading to the capital to play a few dates.

Introducing the band

The Polaris
The Polaris (you can just make them out)

Stewart Marshall runs for Coventry Godiva Harriers and out of the blue last October (2004) an old friend called Daniel linked up for training after a lengthy period out with injury. They got talking as old friends do and they soon realized they had more in common than they first thought. A passion for music led them to start a band, and they seem to have made strides in the space of a year.

So with Stewart on vocal and guitar, Dan on lead guitar and backing vocals The Polaris began to grow. Drummer Paul was enlisted and when the original bassist Gaz left Dan called on an old school friend called Ash to take over duties.

Listen to the band

You have no excuses for not catching the band live. After a private party on the first Friday of the month they take to the stage at the Flanker and Firkin on Saturday, 8 October. They next play The Phoenix on 13 October, Trinity's the day after that and another 10 days later they'll perform a set at the Hope and Anchor.

And The Polaris head to London in November and December for some gigs inbetween more dates in Coventry to round-off a successful year.

If you fancy listening to what they sound like beforehand then fear not.
