Paul Ryan
This man has had a dream

Daydream believer

If you enjoyed listening to Kingtide last year in our band of the month series then you’ll love Circle 3, our featured outfit for August.

Circle 3 is Paul Ryan. It’s not a one-man project – moreover it’s one man’s dream to try and harness the musical talents of many across the world.

You may remember Mr Ryan. Based in Leamington he was a founder member of Kingtide and used to divide his time between the two bands although he has since left the group who were formerly known as Penfold.

The split wasn’t bitter. Far from it in fact with Paul’s former band-mates all playing their part on his debut album which is available for download on Circle 3’s website.

All in a dream

Paul Ryan
Ryan likes to sleep in the afternoon

The project came about a year-and-a-half ago. As Paul explains, the idea came to him during a cat nap.

Paul said: “Two summers ago I was having an afternoon nap when I found myself waking up very suddenly as if I had stopped breathing. Gasping for breath and feeling very confused I had a feeling that the nightmare was about aliens and definitely had something to do with my phone. A couple of days later whilst searching for a friend’s number I noticed a new name added to the phone book of just Circle and the number for it was a single digit three.

“This didn't phase me until about six months later when I saw a circle with the number three in the middle of it written in the dirt on the back of a lorry. This then triggered me up to find out what it meant. I searched the net and didn't find anything exiting, I asked friends and got nothing, I even started asking new people I met what there favourite shape and number was - the nearest I got was circle and two.

“Anyway I love music and I love travelling so in a weird kind of spiritual and mystical way I thought to myself ‘If I can't find the meaning of circle 3, I'll set up this
music/travel project under the name and fate will have to come to me’.”

Listen to the band

Paul Ryan admits to being influenced by a number of contemporaries including Elbow, Damien Rice and Mansun.

To find out what the band sounds like then there are a couple of opportunites to catch Circle 3 live over the coming weeks.

First up is a headline slot at the LAGS FFS Festival in Wolvey on Saturday, 6 August before Summer Shutdown (taking place near Stratford) on Saturday, 10 September.

In the mean time you can have a listen to one of Circle 3’s tracks from the new album.
