Chinese New Year traditionally marks the start of farming activity and is always celebrated at the end of the 12th month of the lunar year. In the Western calendar this is late January or early February.

Family planning

Each year has the characteristics of an animal in the Chinese calendar and 2005 is the year of the rooster (that’s chicken to you and me). People also share some of the characteristics of the year they were born in. So if you’re expecting a baby in 2005, according to the rooster traits he or she may grow up to be:

Famous people born in earlier years of the rooster include Michael Aspel, Yoko Ono, Rod Stewart, Mia Farrow and Eric Clapton.

Personality traits

Find out more about the animal signs by following the link below to the Chinese zodiac page. There we’ve put together some illustrations and personality descriptions by local designer, Vivian Shiu.
