Cornwall has been described as one of the most haunted place in the UK! The famous old Jamaica Inn at Bolventor, near Bodmin, has an equally well known story of a haunting. The ghost of a murdered sailor returning to finish his last drink has been seen by many visitors sitting on a wall outside. Sightings are county-wide. In Penzance at the town's Dolphin Inn, customers have witnessed the sight and sound of an old sea captain. He is said to have been wearing an old tricorn hat and laced ruffles when he pays them an unwelcome visit. The ghost of Charlotte Dymond has been seen over the years. It is one of Cornwall's most fascinating crime stories. Charlotte was found murdered on the slopes of Roughtor, near Camelford in 1844. Her lover, Matthew Weeks, was later hanged at Bodmin Goal for the crime, though it is doubtful that he committed it. Today Bodmin Jail is a popular tourist attraction. The story of Charlotte Dymond and Matthew Weeks is just one of many that it tells. The prison dates back to 1776. The public executions were always guaranteed crowd pullers in years gone by. The hangings retreated behind doors in 1862. The large 18th century structure towers above you as you drive into the car park. Today when you walk around the ground floor at the jail don't be surprised if a hand suddenly rests on your shoulder. Such an occurence has been felt by many including a member of the BBC Cornwall web team! In west Cornwall you can take a tour around one of the most haunted properties in Britain! There are said to be more than 20 separate presences at Pengersick Castle including: a ghostly 14th century monk, a 13 year old girl who danced to her death off the battlements and still tries to swing people around, and a four year old boy who tugs at ladies. Many visitors to Pengersick Castle claim to have encountered some of the ghostly figures. Countless people have seen or photographed strange orbs of light. people inevitably experience strange feelings. These range from sensing they are being watched or charged electric atmospheres, to being tired and drained. Since 2001 ghost researcher Ian Addicoat has been hosting evenings at the castle for groups of people brave enough to spend the hours of darkness in this enigmatic property. There have been some unbelievable occurrences and some very sceptical people who have had their doubts blown away. |
